Holders of Out-of-State Credentials
Multiple (Elementary) and Single Subject (Secondary)

CSUEB-Teacher Education offers a "Fifth Year of Study", the Reading course, the Health Education, Computer Education, and Special Education courses, and can recommend you for a Multiple or Single Subject California credential. This "5th Year" program is for teachers who have completed a teacher preparation program in, or have an teaching credential from, another state or country AND that preparation program included Supervised Student Teaching. If your program did not include Supervised Student Teaching, apply to our Individualized program.


Process
This is a three-step process. These steps are essential and sequential.

  1. Obtain a Preliminary Credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
    Telephone our Credentials Office, 510-885-2272; they can mail the paperwork to you. The appropriate form and current fee schedule is also available directly from the State as well as local school districts and county offices of education. This step takes several months.

  2. Establish a file in our Credentials Service Center.
    The application form and directions may be obtained by telephoning the Credentials Office, 510-885-2272. This step takes up to three weeks depending on the time of year (May to October is a busy time).

  3. Make an appointment with Prof. Sullivan.
    All Prof. Sullivan's appointments are made through the Department office, 510-885-3027. Bring any/all relevant new materials (test scores, transcripts, and the like) to this meeting.
    Please note: Prof. Sullivan **cannot** help you until after the first two steps have been completed.


Entry
"5th Year" candidates may enter any Quarter. A few restrictions apply; those restrictions are explained at the advising appointment with Prof. Sullivan.
