The McHugh Center Services
Circulation policy
All materials, except reference books and journals, may be checked out by Cal State East Bay and Contra Costa Campus faculty, staff and currently registered students. The loan period for most materials is three weeks with one three-week renewal. Reserve materials and videocassettes may be checked out for limited periods of two days to a week. Students who are not currently enrolled and the general public are encouraged to use the Center and its collections; however, materials must be used in the Center. A xerox machine is available in the Center for general usage.
Renewals
Materials may be renewed in a variety of ways:
phone. Call (510)885-3058
e-mail
Overdues and fines
The Center does not charge fines on overdue materials. However, we will encumber University records of a patron with library materials beyond one month overdue ($20 administrative charge applicable). A patron who loses a library item will be required to either (1) provide a replacement copy of the lost item, or (2) pay the Center an amount equivalent to the current market price of the item. Patrons might wish to check the following online sources for price quotations:
Abebooks.com -- to locate sellers of rare, used and out-of-print titles / Amazon.com / Barnes & Noble online / Bibliofind -- for rare & used books, periodicals & ephemera offered by thousands of booksellers / Cody's Books -- Cody's has an extensive children's book department. / Moe's Books on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley -- Moe's has many, many used books, including some children's titles.
Staff
David Hahn, the Center's full-time Library Assistant, has a baccalaureate degree in Secondary Education with an English major and French minor; a teaching credential in English/Language Arts; and a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction with emphasis in library services. In any quarter, there are, on the average, one or two students from the University Financial Aid Office's Work-Study Program assisting with daily routines and special projects.

Computing Resources
The Center provides a local area computing network in the Curriculum Room (AE153) and wireless access for the CSUEB community. Usage priority is given to students, staff, and faculty of the College of Education and Allied Studies.
Instruction
David Hahn highly encourages instructors in College of Education courses to bring their classes into the Center for tours and for instruction in the use of local and online resources. Every attempt is made to tailor instruction to course-specific needs.
Course Reserves
The Center maintains reserve shelves for professors/instructors from the Department of Teacher Education and occasionally from other departments in the College of Education & Allied Studies. Reserve shelves are located in the McHugh Center Office.
Special Services: Summer Reading Clinic
Every summer the Teacher Education Department sponsors an elementary remedial reading clinic for students in grades two through six who are reading at least one or more years below grade level. This program is an integral part of the Department's Graduate Reading Specialist credential. It is, in essence, a practicum for the Reading Specialist candidates, who work one-to-one with a child for two hours a day, Monday through Friday, for seven weeks. During this time, the McHugh Reading & Curriculum Resource Center becomes a community resource for the teachers, the children and their parents.
The Center also coordinates the facilities setup and application process for the Summer Reading Clinic. Parents or teachers of a child who is experiencing severe reading difficulty (e.g., one to two years below grade level) are encouraged to call the Center and request application forms. Two applications are required: one from the parent(s) and a second from the school which the child attends. Unfortunately, each year the Center receives more applicants for the Clinic than we can accept, so application for the Clinic does not guarantee acceptance into the program. We begin releasing application forms about March 15 each year. We recommend that interested parties do not call before this date.
