CAL STATE HAYWARD DEFEATS CAL STATE EAST BAY IN FIRST EVER ALUMNI VS. ALUMNI BASEBALL GAME
HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal State Hayward defeated the Pioneers 10-9 in the first annual Alumni vs. Alumni Baseball Game on October 10. The Pioneers tied the score 4-4 on a three-run homer by Michael Thomasson. Cal State Hayward took an 8-5 lead in the seventh inning highlighted by a two-run double by Brian Lloyd. Cal State Hayward added two more runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run home run off the bat of Manny Merel. Lamonte Toney belted a three-run home run as a late rally in the bottom of the ninth fell short for the Pioneers. Steven Roll, the fourth of five Cal State Hayward pitchers, recorded the victory. Lloyd, Merel, and Steven Shinkwin each drove in a pair of runs while Tyler Shook was 2-for-2 at the plate for Cal State Hayward. Toney and Thomasson drove in seven of the Pioneers nine runs. Domingo Rodriguez and Jason Bumbaca each had two hits for the Pioneers. Ray Stokes had a big day for the Pioneers with two hits, three runs scored, and four stolen bases.

FORMER PIONEERS MAKE WAVES IN EUROPE
HAYWARD, Calif. - With their collegiate playing days over, many student-athletes look ahead to graduation and life outside the sports' realm. For former Cal State East Bay baseball players Ray Stokes and Marco Cartagena, however, the next step was a trip to Europe to experience baseball abroad. Over the summer of 2009, Stokes and Cartagena tried their hands at life and baseball in Germany and Italy, respectively - traveling, learning and playing in a foreign language on a continent better known for its love of goals than homeruns. CAL STATE EAST BAY ALUM FINDS SUCCESS IN PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL
Former Cal State East Bay baseball player Archie Gilbert joined the rest of the Midland RockHounds in celebrating their Texas League championship on Sept. 20, after the Oakland Athletics' AA-affiliate topped Northwest Arkansas in the decisive fourth game of the best-of-five championship series. Gilbert, a 2005 East Bay grad, has now been a part of two straight championship teams after helping the Stockton Ports take home the California League title in 2008. Click for more
