CAL STATE EAST BAY SEASON CONCLUDES WITH 85-71 DEFEAT TO DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY IN SECOND ROUND OF CAL PAC CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS/AMY ELLIOTT, MORGAN HUNTER NAMED TO CAL PAC ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
Cal State East Bay (9-18, 6-10 Cal Pac) 2008-09 season came to an end following an 85-71 defeat to Dominican University in the second round of the Cal Pac Conference Basketball Playoffs on February 25. Amy Elliott was named first team while Morgan Hunter received honorable mention recognition on the Cal Pac Women's Basketball All-Conference Team. For the season, the Pioneers averaged 74.9 points and 38.8 rebounds a game. The Pioneers had four players averaging in double figures led by Morgan Hunter (12.4ppg). Hunter had 69 assists. Marie Colon, averaging 12.8 points in six games, missed most of the 2008-09 season with a knee injury. Kristina Lin averaged 10.4 points per game. Amy Elliott averaged 11.4 points per game and had a team-best 97 assists. Frieda Li averaged 8.7 points and 4.6 rebounds a contest. The Pioneers season came to an end after losing to Dominican University 85-71 in the second round of the Cal Pac Conference Playoffs on February 25. Cal State East Bay led 39-37 at halftime, but were outscored by 16 points in the second half. Morgan Hunter led the Pioneers in scoring with 18 including 4-three pointers. Andrea Rodriguez and Frieda Li scored 12 and 11 points respectively. Cal State East Bay defeated William Jessup University 77-58 in the first round of the Cal Pac Conference Playoffs on February 24. Amy Elliott led the Pioneers in scoring with 23 points. She added seven rebounds. Morgan Hunter had 11 points and seven rebounds. Ashley Jacobs came off the bench to score eight points on 4-of-7 from the field. Jacobs had six rebounds. The Pioneers concluded the regular season with a 63-56 victory over CSU-Maritime on February 19. Amy Elliott led the Pioneers with 12 points and five rebounds. Lyndsay Cherf came off the bench to score eight points and five rebounds. Cal State East Bay won its five Cal Pac Conference game of the season defeating Pacific Union College 89-66 on February 14. The Pioneers had four players score in double figures led by Amy Elliott with 17 points. Kelsey McKenzie scored 12 points while Colleen Cooley and Frieda Li tallied 10 each. The Pioneers recorded a 69-61 non-conference victory over U.C. Santa Cruz on February 11. Kristina Lin and Frieda Li each scored 13 points for the Pioneers. Morgan Hunter followed with 12 points. Shay Williams led the Pioneers on the boards with eight rebounds. The Pioneers lost to Dominican University 79-73 on February 7. Cal State East Bay trailed 34-33 at halftime and was outscored 45-40 in the second half. The Pioneers had four players score in double figures led by Amy Elliott and Colleen Cooley with 14 points each. Morgan Hunter and Frieda Li followed with 13 points. Li had a team-best six rebounds. The Pioneers led 43-39 at halftime, but were outscored by 14 points in the second half. Frieda Li came off the bench to score 16 points on 6 of 9 from the field. Andrea Rodriguez followed with 14 points while Ashley Jacobs and Kristina Lin scored 11 each. The Pioneers scored a season-best 104 points en route to a 104-61 victory over visiting Simpson University on January 29. Cal State East Bay scored 63 points in the second half while shooting 52.7 percent from the field and 54.5 percent (12-22) from the three-point area. The Pioneers had six players score in double figures led by Ashley Jacobs and Kristina Lin with 17 and 16 points respectively. Firieda Li came off the bench to 13 points while Andrea Rodriguez followed with 12. Emily Schaefer and Colleen Cooley each scored 10 points. As a team, the Pioneers had 27 assists led by Amy Elliott with 10. Cal State East Bay lost to Cal Pac leader Holy Names University 87-82 on January 24. The Pioneers led 46-43 at halftime, but were outscored by eight points in the second half. Morgan Hunter led the Pioneers with 22 points on 9 of 13 from the field and 2 of 6 three-pointers. Hunter had eight rebounds. Amy Elliott followed Hunter with 21 points on 8 of 12 from the field and 4 of 7 three-pointers. Kristina Lin came off the bench to score 14 points while Ashley Jacobs added 10. Colleen Cooley led the Pioneers on the boards with nine rebounds. The Pioneers finished the first half of Cal Pac play at 3-5 following a 77-72 defeat to CSU-Maritime on January 22. Morgan Hunter led all scorers with 28 points including 5-three pointers. Andrea Rodriguez and Kristina Lin each scored 13 points. Ashley Jacobs led the Pioneers on the boards with six rebounds. Cal State East Bay lost a non-conference game to Academy of Arts University 90-86 on January 17. Morgan Hunter led four Pioneer players in double figures with 19 points. Amy Elliott followed with 17 points and added six assists. Ashley Jacobs scored 13 points while Kelsey McKenzie came off the bench to score 10 points. The Pioneers defeated Pacific Union College 93-45 on January 16. The Pioneers had four players in double figures led by Kristina Lin with 17 points. Amy Elliott followed with 15 points,six assists, and five steals. Frieda Li scored 12 points on 5 of 8 from the field. Ashley Jacobs contributed to the Pioneer victory with 10 points and eight rebounds. Guard Morgan Hunter had a season-best 10 assists. Cal State East Bay lost to Cal Pac leader Dominican University 95-80 on January 10. The Pionners led 45-41 at halftime. Amy Elliott and Ashley Jacobs each scored 21 points to lead the Pioneers. Jacobs, who scored a career-high 21 points, led the Pioneers on the boards with nine rebounds. The Pioneers defeated Bethany University 77-72 on January 8. Frieda Li came off the bench to lead the Pioneers in scoring with 21 points and contributed defensively with five steals. Morgan Hunter contributed to the Pioneer victory with 13 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Andrea Rodriguez and Kristina Lin each scored 10 points. Cal State East Bay split a pair of games in the Whittier Tournament on January 3-4. The Pioneers defeated Castleton College 71-55 on January 3. Morgan Hunter led the Pioneers in scoring with 14 points followed by Amy Elliott and Frieda Li with 10 each. Colleen Cooley led the Pioneers on the boards with 14 rebounds. Cal State East Bay lost to Whittier College 84-67 on January 4. Colleen Cooley led all scorers with 24 points. Cooley completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Kristina Lin came off the bench to score 16 points. Amy Elliott scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. The Pioneers dropped a heart-breaker to visiting William Jessup University 95-93 on December 20. The Pioneers led 93-90 with five seconds remaining only to see William Jessup scored five unanswered points to win the game. Frieda Li led six Pioneer players in double figures with 22 points including 13 of 16 freethrows. Li also had nine rebounds and four assists. Nicole Hornage scored 13 points while Amy Elliott added 12. Cal State East Bay lost to Menlo College 67-54 on December 17. Morgan Hunter led the Pioneers in scoring with 16 points. Kristina Lin had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Pioneers split two Cal Pac Conference games last weekend. Cal State East Bay lost to Holy Names University 95-83 on December 12. Kelsey McKenzie came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with 18 points on 7 of 8 from the field and 4 of 4 from the three point area. Amy Elliott followed with 16 points and six rebounds. Frieda Li scored 12 points and had six rebounds. The Pioneers notched their first win of the season with an 81-67 victory over Simpson University. Morgan Hunter led all scorers with 24 points including six three-pointers. Hunter pulled down seven rebounds. Kristina Lin came off the bench to score 21 points on 8 of 12 from the field. Cal State East Bay lost two games in the Pioneer Invitational on December 5-6. The Pioneers lost to Puget Sound 65-59. Nicole Hornage led the Pioneers in scoring with 14 points while Amy Elliott added 10. Cal State East Bay concluded tournament play with an 82-73 defeat to Lewis and Clark College. Marie Colon had a solid game with 20 points, four rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and two steals. Amy Elliott scored 16 points and five assists. Kristina Lin came off the bench to score 12 points. The Pioneers lost two games at the Menlo Invitational on November 29-30. Cal State East Bay lost Grandview College 73-54 on November 29. Frieda Li led the Pioneers in scoring with 14 points on 6 of 13 from the field. Marie Colon was the Pioneers top rebounder with 10. Cal State East Bay concluded tournament play on November 30 with an 80-55 defeat to Westmont College. The Pioneer women's basketball team opened the 2008-09 season with a heartbreaking defeat to Cal Lutheran 104-103 on November 22. Cal State East Bay led 103-101 only to see Cal Lutheran convert a 3-pointer with less than a second remaining to win the game. The Pioneers Marie Colon led all scorers with 30 points on 9 of 12 from the field, 3 of 4 three-pointers and 9 of 10 from the free throw line. Amy Elliott converted 6 three-pointers and finished with 20 points. Kristina Lin came off the bench to score 14 points. As a team, the Pioneers shot 51.5 percent from the field (35-68) and 48.3 percent from the 3-point area (14-29). Colon's 30 point output earned her Cal Pac Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week recognition.
2008-2009 SEASON OUTLOOK
Integrity.Intensity.Accountability.Commitment.Respect.These are the words that describe the characteristics that Toni West, CSU,East Bay first-year Head Women's Basketball Coach, instills in her student-athletes. It is with this focus that the 2008-09 CSU, East Bay Pioneers will approach their final season in the Cal Pac (NAIA) conference, before joining NCAA Division II competition in the CCAA. Cal State East Bay finished the 2007-08 season with a record of 15-12 and was second in the Cal Pac at 11-5. This year CSUEB starts CSUEB starts the season ranked #2 in the preseason Cal Pac polls. "I'm excited for this year." Coach West continued. "Our young women have great work ethic and commitment to accomplish their shared goal." The contributing returning players (AMY ELLIOTT 10.3 ppg, 5.3 apg, ASHLEY JACOBS, EMILY SCHAEFER, KELSEY MACKENZIE 35% from 3, and NICOLE HORNAGE 7.6 ppg, 5.9 rpg) bring a history of success and a sense of urgency in the face of their last season of Cal Pac play. Newcoming transfer students include ANDREA RODRIGUEZ (Delta JC), COLLEEN COOLEY (Cerritos Community C.), KRISTINA LIN (Menlo College), LYNDSAY CHERF (Las Positas C.), MARIE COLON (Skyline College), MEGAN CHRISTIAN (Los Medanos C.), MELANIE INOUYE (Ohlone College), and MORGAN HUNTER (Sacramento City College), who bring a great mix of explosive offense and defensive tenacity. The roster is rounded out with three freshmen BRITTANY MONK (Florin High School), FRIEDA LI (Issaguah High School), and NIA BRAVO (Bishop Montgomery High School) who will look to make immediate contributions on and off the court. The Pioneers are working hard to achieve their goals and they know that anything is possible if you have Integrity, Intelligence, Intensity, Accountabilty, Commitment, and Respect.
PIONEER WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM CONCLUDES ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON
Cal State East Bay finished the 2007-08 season with a record of 15-12 and was second in the Cal Pac at 11-5. The Pioneers defeated Menlo College 61-48 in the semi-finals of the Cal Pac Conference Post-Season Tournament. Amy Elliott led all scorers with 23 points including six 3-pointers. Jenene James scored eight points and 11 rebounds. A successful season came to an end for the Pioneers as they lost the Cal Pac Championship game to Holy Names University 52-46. Michelle Hobbs scored 10 points on 5 of 8 from the field. Jenene James led the Pioneers on the boards with 14 rebounds. Bianca Benschop came off the bench to score eight points and grab six rebounds. The Pioneers were 10-2 at home and for the season averaged 62.6 points a game. Cal State East Bay allowed 55.8 points per game. The Pioneers had 294 steals compared to 209 for their opponents. Amy Elliott, who was named to the All-Cal Pac Team, averaged 10.3 points a game. Elliott led the Pioneers with 62 three-pointers, 144 assists (7th-NAIA 5.63) and 54 steals. She had nearly a 2-1 assist to turnover ratio (144-73-8th NAIA). Jenene James, averaged 8.5 points and 6.2 rebounds a game. The Pioneers split a pair of road Cal Pac Conference games to conclude the regular season. Cal State East Bay lost to William Jessup 60-42 on February b14. Cal State East Bay concluded the regular season on February 16 with a 69-27 victory Pacific Union College. Jenene James and Bianca Benschop each scored 14 points for the Pioneers. Amy Elliott scored 10 points. Cal State East Bay split a pair of home games over the weekend. Cal State East Bay defeated U.C. Santa Cruz 71-55 on February 8. Ashley Butler led the Pioneers with 14 points and nine rebounds. Amy Elliott followed with 11 points and seven assists. The Pioneers lost to Cal Maritime 60-54 on February 9. Ashley Butler and Breanna Carson led the Pioneers with 12 and 11 points respectively. Jenene James, who scored nine points, led the Pioneers on the boards with 13 rebounds. The Pioneers improved to 10-3 in Cal Pac Conferenc play with a 75-62 victory over Dominican University on February 2. Cal State East Bay trailed 36-26 at halftime, but outscored Dominican University 49-26 in the second half. Ashley Butler led four Pioneer players in double figures with 13 points. Amy Elliott followed with 12 points while Jenene James and Bianca Benschop each scored 11. Cal State East Bay lost to first place Holy Names University 61-56 on January 31. Kelsey MacKenzie led three Pioneer players in double figures with 13 points. Ashley Butler recorded a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Christine Riley came off the bench to score 10 points. The Pioneers defeated Menlo College 61-55 on January 26. Breanna Carson led the Pioneers in scoring with 12 points including three 3-pointers. Nicole Hornage led the Pioneers on the boards with 13 rebounds. Cal State improved to 8-2 in the Cal Pac with a 79-61 victory over Simpson University on January 24. Ashley Butler came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with 23 points on 10 of 11 from the field. Jenene James scored 14 points on 6 of 9 from the field while Breanna Carson scored 10. As a team, the Pioneers shot 50 percent from the field. The Pioneers lost to Holy Names 64-52 on January 22. Ashley Butler came off the bench to score 16 points and pull down nine rebounds. Jenene James had 10 points and eight rebounds. Cal State East Bay improved to 7-1 in the Cal Pac with a 62-48 win over visiting Bethany University on January 19. Amy Elliott led the Pioneers with 15 points and nine assists. Jenene James and Kelsey MacKenzie followed with 14 each. James completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. The Pioneers made it four straight victories with an 87-17 win over Pacific Union College on January 17. Kelsey MacKenzie led three Pioneers in double figures with 12 points. Michelle Hobbs and Emily Schaefer each scored 11 points. Schaefer added five steals. Cal State East Bay improved to 5-1 in Cal Pac Conference play with a 62-36 win over William Jessup on January 12. Nicole Hornage led the Pioneers in scoring with 14 points on 7 of 9 from the field. Breanna Carson and Jenene James each scored 11 points. The Pioneers defeated CSU-Maritime 68-43 on January 10. Three Pioneers scored in double figures led by Jenene James with 12 points. Amy Elliott and Bianca Benschop each scored 10 points. The Pioneers recorded an 88-57 victory over Dominican University on January 5. The Pioneers converted 14 of 29 three-pointers and outrebounded Dominican University by a 42-36 margin. Breanna Carson and Amy Elliott each scored 19 points to lead the Pioneers. Carson led the Pioneers on the boards with a season-high nine rebounds. Elliott had eight assists and three steals. Jenene James scored 11 points while Nicole Hornage contributed to the Pioneer victory with nine points and seven rebounds. Cal State East Bay lost two games in Washington on December 29-30 to Lewis and Clark 85-73 and Puget Sound 86-52. Amy Elliott came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with 20 points including six three-pointers against Lewis and Clark. Nicole Hornage followed with 16 points on 7 of 12 from the field and 2 of 3 three-pointers. Hornage and Breanna Carson each scored 11 points against Puget Sound. Elliott was named to the All-Tournament team. The Pioneers were defeated by George Fox University 72-46 on December 18. Amy Elliott led the Pioneers in scoring with 10 points. Cal State East Bay lost to Cal Lutheran 58-39 on December 17. Amy Elliott led the Pioneers with 11 points while Christine Riley followed with eight. The Pioneers defeated Simpson University 86-66. Cal State East Bay led 39-33 at halftime and scored 47 points in the second half. Ashley Butler came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with 17 points and eight rebounds. Drea Jones contributed to the Pioneer victory with 10 points on four of five from the field. Cal State East Bay opened Cal Pac Conference play on December 6 with a 64-46 victory over Bethany University. The Pioneers led 25-21 at halftime and outscored the Bruins by 14 points in the second half. Breanna Carson led three Pioneer players with 15 points on 5 of 7 from the field and 3 of 4 three-pointers. Ashley Butler came off the bench to score 12 points and led the Pioneers on the boards with seven rebounds. Nicole Hornage contributed to the Cal State East Bay victory with 11 points. The Pioneers lost a defensive battle to Menlo College 43-41. Nicole Hornage led all scorers with 17 points on 7 of 10 from the field . Hornage led the Pioneers on the boards with nine rebounds. Ashley Butler came off the bench to score nine points and pull down eight rebounds. Cal State East Bay won two games at the Pioneer Invitational on November 30-December 1. The Pioneers defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 70-39. Cal State East Bay shot 56.3 percent from the field in the second half and had a 38-31 advantage on the boards. Ashley Butler led the Pioneers with 16 points and five rebounds. Amy Elliott followed with 13 points and a game-high 11 assists and five steals. Cal State East Bay concluded tournament play with a 62-47 victory over U.C. Santa Cruz. Elliott led the Pioneers 14 points while Breanna Carson came off the bench to score 10. The Pioneers held a 51-32 rebound edge led by Nicole Hornage with nine rebounds. The Pioneer women's basketball team lost two games in Southern California to open the 2007-08 season. Cal State East Bay lost to U. Redlands 74-55 on November 16 and Chapman University 85-68 on November 17. Amy Elliott led the Pioneers with 14 points while Bianca Benschop added 10 against Redlands. The Pioneers had four players scored in double figures against Chapman. Elliott led all scorers with 22 points including 5-three pointers. Nicole Hornage added 11 points while Jenene James and Ashley Butler scored 10 each. Hornage and James also pulled down six rebounds. The Pioneers return four players from last year including All-Cal Pac performers Breanna Carson (11.0 points per game-team leader with 37 three-pointers) along with Amy Elliott (35 three-pointers). Jenene James will be back for her senior campaign while Aundrea Jones returns for her junior campaign. Newcomers expected to contribute for the Pioneers this season include Jaime vandeSande (5'7-Guard) and Bianca Benschop (5'10-Center) both from San Jose City College, Angela Steward (5'3-Guard) and Kelsey MacKenzie (5'4-Guard) both from Notre Dame de Namur, along with Nicole Hornage (5'9, Forward) Scottsdale Community College.
