/PIONEERS HEADED TO NAIA CHAMPIONSHIPS/CAL STATE EAST BAY MEN'S GOLF FINISHES SECOND IN NAIA REGION II CHAMPIONSHIP

Cal State East Bay men's golf team will be competing in the NAIA Championships on May 12-16 in Plymouth, Indiana. The Pioneer men's golf team finished second out of nine teams in the NAIA Region II Championship on April 21-22 at the Terra Lago Golf Course in Indio, CA. Cal State East Bay finished four strokes behind champion Point Loma Nazarene and 31 strokes ahead of third place The Master's College. Jeff Murphy and Les Teuteberg placed second and third respectively in the individual championship and earned All-Region honors. Murphy was one-over for the tournament shooting a three-round score of 217. He shot a 3-under 69 in the first round. Teuteberg finished one stroke behind Murphy with a three-round score of 218. He shot one-under par 71 in the first and third rounds. Bobby Bucey finished in a 10th place tie with a three-round score of 231. Scott Steelman shot a three-round score of 235 to finish 18th while Jordan Cimino shot 240 to finish in 23rd place. Cal State East Bay is awaiting an at large bid to be determined on May 2 for the NAIA Championships on May 12-16 in Plymouth, Indiana.

CAL STATE EAST BAY TO COMPETE IN NAIA REGION II CHAMPIONSHIPS/PIONEERS CAPTURE FIRST EVER CAL PAC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Pioneer men's golf team will be competing in the NAIA Region II Championships at Pismo Beach on April 19-22. Cal State East Bay finished ninth in Buzzini/Stanislaus Invitational on April 14-15. Jeff Murphy led all Pioneer golfers with a three-round, four-over-par score of 220 (12th-t). Les Teuteberg shot eight-over 224 to finished tied for 23rd place.The Pioneer men's golf team completed a sweep of the season and were Cal Pac Conference champions on April 4 for the first time ever. Les Teuteberg had the best average score, winning "Player of the Year." Also, freshmen Bobby Bucey and Sean Callahan earned "First Team All-Conference" honors. Alan Sue was named Cal Pac Conference Coach of the Year.

PIONEERS CAPTURE MENLO TOURNAMENT

The Pioneers finished with a one-round score of 294 to capture the Menlo College Tournament on March 20. The Menlo College Tournament featured five teams from the California Pacific Conference. Cal State's Jeff Murphy won the individual championship with a score of 70. Teammate Les Teuteberg shot a 72 to finish in third. Scott Steelman, Bobby Bucey, and Sean Callahan all shot 76 to finish in a sixth place tie.

PIONEERS FINISH SEVENTH IN CAL LUTHERAN KINGSMEN INVITATIONAL

Cal State East Bay finished seventh in the CLU Kingsmen Invitational on March 17-18. The Pioneers had a three-round score of 954. Les Teuteberg led the Pioneers as he shot a three-round score of 230 to finish in a sixth place tie. Scott Steelman tied for 15th place with a three-round score of 235. Jordan Cimino shot a three-round score of 240 to finish tied for 25th place.

CAL STATE EAST BAY MEN'S GOLF TEAM FINISHES THIRD IN NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR INVITATIONAL

The Pioneers finished third in the Notre Dame de Namur Invitational on March 10-11. Cal State East Bay had a three-round score of 878 three strokes tournament champion Valdosta State. Cal State's Jeff Murphy finished second overall with an 8-under 208 including a 65 in the second round. Les Teuteberg shot a 4-under 212 to finish in third place. Teuteberg shot a 2-under 70 in the first two rounds. Scott Steelman fired a three-round score of 226 to finished tied for 23rd place.

CAL STATE EAST BAY WOMEN'S GOLF TEAM PLACES FOURTH IN NAIA REGION II CHAMPIONSHIP

The Pioneer women's golf team placed fourth in the NAIA Region II Championship on April 21-22 at the Cypress Ridge Country Club in Arroyo Grande, CA. Cal State East Bay finished with a three round score of 695. Kelly Tilton earned all West Region honors as she shot a three-round 166 to finish in a fourth place tie. Bianca Matta finished in a 16th place tie with a score of 181. Patty Walsh and Christina Walker finished 19th and 21st with scores of 185 and 202.

PIONEER WOMEN GOLFERS FINISH SECOND IN CAL STATE EAST BAY INVITATIONAL

The Pioneers finished second out of four teams in the Cal State East Bay Invitational on February 24-26. Kelly Tilton finished second overall with a two round score of 163. Tilton bested all golfers with a 79 in the second round. Patty Walsh was 12th with a score of 179 while Bianca Matta followed at 182. Christina Walker shot a two-round 189 to finish in 15th place.

PIONEER WOMEN GOLFERS WRAP UP FALL SEASON IN HAWAII

The Fall season for the women's golf team of CSUEB was a season of firsts. The Pioneers played three Freshmen in a tournament for the first time ever. The team was ranked in the top-50 for the first time ever, ending the season at #51 in the NAIA. It was also the first time that the team traveled to Hawaii as they competed in the U. Hawaii-Hilo/Vulcan's Invitational. In Hawaii, the team posted its best team scores of the season (365, 369, and 367). The team was lead in scoring for the Fall season by Freshman Bianca Matta (91.3), Junior Kelly Tilton (92.1), and fourth-year Senior Patty Walsh (94). The Pioneers will begin their Spring season February 17-19, 2008 at CSU San Marcos and will also host a home tournament at Monarch Bay GC in San Leandro on Feb. 24-26, 2008.

CSUEB MEN'S GOLF FINISHES THE FALL SEASON IN THE TOP-20 IN THE NAIA

The Pioneer men's golf team set the bar for future teams. For the first time the program is ranked in the top-15 of the NAIA. The team also swept the first three California Pacific Conference tournaments putting them in first place. The team finished second at the 3rd Annual Eagle Invitational hosted by Concordia (CA), beating University of Victoria (ranked #7th in the NAIA). Junior college transfers, Les Teuteberg (Cabrillo College) and Jeff Murphy (Chabot College), have lead the way for the Pioneers. Teuteberg and Murphy averaged 70.9 and 74.5 respectively for the Fall. Teuteberg is 9 strokes under par through 9 rounds. The team will face an early challenge in the Spring season as they will compete in Oklahoma Christian University's tournament in Arizona, which boasts a field of several top-10 teams in the NAIA.

WOMEN'S GOLF TEAM WILL PLAY A COMPETITIVE SCHEDULE DURING THE 2007-08 SEASON. FORMER CSUEB ASSISTANT COACH ALAN SUE BEGINS HIS THIRD YEAR WITH THE WOMEN'S GOLF PROGRAM.

PIONEER MEN'S GOLF TEAM CAPTURES CAL PAC TOURNAMENT/FINISHES SECOND IN CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY INVITATIONAL

The Pioneer men's golf team shot a score of 302 to capture the Cal Pac Tournament hosted by CSU-Maritime on October 11. Les Tuteberg won the individual title with an even par 72. Teammate Wes Davis tied for second with a round of 74. Bobby Bucey shot a score of 75 to tie for fourth place. Sean Callahan finished in a two-way tie for sixth with a round of 77. Mario Castellanos shot a score of 78 to finish in a two-way tie for eighth. Facing some of the top NAIA West Region teams, the Pioneers placed second in the Concordia University Invitational on October 15-16. The Pioneers finished with a team score of 868, one stroke better than #7 ranked Victoria-BC. Les Teuteberg shot a season-best five-under-par 211 to finish in third place. Jeff Murphy finished in a four-way tie for 10th with a score of 218. The Pioneers will compete in the Cal Pac Tournament hosted by Dominican University on October 18.

CAL STATE EAST BAY MEN'S GOLF TEAM FINISHES SECOND IN CAL PAC CONFERENCE SPRING GOLF TOURNAMENT/PIONEERS PLACE 5TH IN NAIA REGION II CHAMPIONSHIP/PIONEER MEN'S GOLF TEAM CAPTURES MENLO SPRING TOURNAMENT/OUTSTANDING TEAM PERFORMANCE EARNS CSUEB MEN'S GOLF TEAM SECOND PLACE SHOWING IN CLU KINGSMEN INVITATIONAL

Cal State East Bay men's golf team placed second in the Cal Pac Conference Spring Golf Tournament on April 5. The Pioneers shot a team score of 303. Gary Tewell shot an even-par 72 to finish in a second-place tie. Kevin Wentworth, a Division III All-American and Jake Saito placed seventh and eighth with scores of 75 and 77 respectively. Mario Castellanos shot a round of 79 to finish in 11th place.

The Pioneers topped three Cal Pac Conference teams and finished in fifth place in the NAIA Region II Championship on April 22-24. Kevin Wentworth led all Pioneers with a 14-over-three-round score of 230 good for a sixth place tie. Gary Tewell finished in a four-way tie for 13th place with a three-round score of 233. Jake Saito shot a three round score of 236 to tie for 21st place.

The Pioneer men's golf team captured the Menlo College Spring Golf Tournament on March 21. Cal State East Bay had a team-score of 287, 11 strokes better than second place Holy Names University. Josh Vanek shot a 2-under-par 70 to lead the Pioneers. Jake Saito and Kevin Wentworth tied for second with 71s. Gary Tewell shot a round of 75 followed by Derek Chang with a score of 76.

Playing their best golf of the spring season, the Cal State East Bay men's golf team finished second in the Cal Lutheran University Kingsmen Invitational on March 19-20. The Pioneers had a three-round score of 918, eight strokes in back of winner U. of LaVerne. Kevin Wentworth shot a three-round score of 226 to finish third. Wentworth led after two rounds following an even par 72. Gary Tewell ended in a three-way tie for fifth with a score of 228. Jake Saito locked up in a four-way for 14th at 233.

Cal State East Bay women's golf team finished in fifth place in the NAIA Region II Tournament on April 22-24. Kelly Tilton led all CSUEB golfers with a two-round score of 177 good for 16th place. Patty Walsh finished in 18th place with a two-round score of 180. Christina Walker followed in 19th place at 184. The Pioneer women's golf team placed seventh out of nine teams in the CSU-Monterey Bay Lady Otter Invitational on March 19-20. Kelly Tilton tied for 12th place with a two round score of 170. Micalann shot a two-round score of 177 to finish in a 20th place tie. Cal State East Bay men's golf team placed second in the East Bay Invitational on October 19. Kevin Wentworth and Jake Saito shot a three-over 74 to tie for fifth place. Derek Chang placed 11th with a round of 76 while Gary Tewell shot a score of 80 to finish 15th.

PIONEERS FINISH SIXTH IN NAIA REGION II CHAMPIONSHIP/CAL STATE EAST BAY MEN'S GOLF TEAM FINISHES SECOND IN CAL PAC CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

The Pioneer men's golf team finished in sixth place with a three round score of 957 in the NAIA Region II Championship April 24-25. Gary Tewell and Kevin Wentworth each shot a three round score of 234. Tewell shot a three-over par 75 in the final round while Wentworth also shot a 75 in the first round. Jake Saito finished 21st with a three-round score of 237. A tremendous team performance enabled the Cal State East Bay men's golf team to finish second in the Cal Pac Conference Tournament hosted by the Pioneers on April 5. The Pioneers finished second in the team standings and qualified or the NAIA Regionals on April 23 with a score of 296, two strokes behind Cal Pac Champion Holy Names University. Kevin Wentworth and Anthony Ballonado each shot a two-over 73 to finish in a three-way tie for third place in individual play. Gary Tewell finished with a 74 to finish in a three-way tie for sixth place. Jake Saito finished in a three-way tie for 10th place with a round of 76. Mario Castellanos shot a 79 to round out the Pioneers excellent showing.

The Pioneer men's golf team defeated Menlo College 311-320 in a dual match on March 29. Gary Tewell led all golfers with a two-over par 74. Mario Castellanos followed with a round of 76 while Jake Saito shot a score of 80. Cal State East Bay men's golf team finished in eighth place at the Cal Lutheran Invitational on March 20-21. Gary Tewell led all CSUEB golfers and finished fourth overall with a three-round score of 230. Jake Saito finished 12th with a score of 238 including a 74 in the final round. Anthony Ballonado shot a three-round score of 242 while Mario Castellanos finished at 260.

The Pioneer women's golf team placed fourth in the NAIA Regionals on April 23-25. Kelly Tilton led all CSUEB golfers and finished 13th with a two-round score of 193. Tilton shot a season-best 94 in the first-round. Patty Walsh and Sheenah Huerta each finished with a two round score of 242.

CAL STATE EAST BAY GOLF 2004-05 SUMMARY

Good individual and team performances highlighted the CSUEB men's and women's golf teams during the 2004-05 season. The Pioneer men's golf team finished third in the Spring Cal Pac Conference Championships and for the second time in school history, competed in the NAIA Region II Championship. CSUEB best performance of the season was an eighth place finish in the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen Invitational. Among the institutions CSUEB defeated included Southwestern University, UT-Dallas, Mary Hardin-Baylor, and McMurry University. In head-to-head competition within the Region, the Pioneers posted a 12-6 record. Senior Justin Summers was the Pioneers top golfer during the 2004-05 campaign. In the Cal Pac Fall Tournament, Summers shot a round of 70 to finish third and had a round of 73 to place fourth in the Notre Dame de Namur Cal Pac Tournament. In the Kingsmen Invitational, Summers shot a two-round score of 151 to finish in a sixth-place tie. Summers had a three-round score of 229 to finish ninth in the NAIA Region II Championship. Senior Nate Weidner also enjoyed a solid campaign for the Pioneers. Weidner finished second in the Notre Dame de Namur Cal Pac Tournament and the Cal Pac Conference Tournament with rounds of 72 and 69 respectively. He finished in a sixth place tie with a round of 151 in the Kingsmen Invitational. Weidner placed 13th in the NAIA Region II Championship. The Pioneers also received solid individual performances from freshmen Anthony Ballonado and Ryan Lancaster. Ballonado placed 12th in the Cal Pac Conference Tournament and finished 15th in the Cal Pac Championship. Lancaster shot a season-best 77 to finish 12th in the Cal Pac Conference Tourney.

The Cal State East Bay women's golf team showed progress in their third year of intercollegiate competition. During the 2004-05 campaign, the Pioneers competed in the San Marcus Invitational (San Diego) and the U.C. Santa Cruz Invitational. Senior Amy Austin was the Pioneers top golfer during the 2004-05 season. Austin shot a season-best 89 to finish seventh in the Notre Dame de Namur Tournament. She finished 24th in the U.C. Santa Cruz Invitational. CSUEB also received good outings from junior Heather Buckley and freshman Patty Walsh.
