PIONEER WOMEN'S SWIM TEAM RECEIVES GOOD INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES IN DUAL MEET DEFEAT TO SAN JOSE STATE
The Pioneers received some impressive individual performances in a 129-57 dual meet defeat to San Jose State on January 9. Jill Lothian placed second in the 100 fly (1:06.47) and the 100 breast (1:14.21). Christine Gee recorded a time of 1:12.36 to finish second in the 100 back. Sarah Hurtubise finished second in the 100 fly with a clocking of 1:06. Sami Hernandez placed fourth out of seven swimmers in the 200 free with a time of 2:05.40.
PIONEER SWIM TEAM PLACES FOURTH IN CAL LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY INVITATIONAL
The Pioneers finished fourth with 226.5 points in the Cal Lutheran University Invitational on January 2. Jill Lothian clocked a time of 25.78 to finish fourth in the 50 yard freestyle. Melissa Grottkau recorded a pair of sixth place finishes in the 200 yard breastroke (2:43.29) and the 200 yard IM (2:30.66). Christine Gee recorded a time of 1:08.23 to place sixth in the 100 yard backstroke. Brenda O'Connor finished 8th in the 500 yard freestyle ( 5:49.09) while Vanessa Smith placed 9th in the 200 yard backstroke. The foursome of Sarah Hurtubise, Lothian, Sami Hernandez, and Olina Wibroe-Benson finished 6th with a time of 4:01.12 in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
PIONEER SWIM TEAM FINISHES EIGHTH IN FINIS COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL
The Pioneers placed eighth in the Finis Collegiate Invitational on December 11-14. Jenni Perez finished 13th with a time of 19:39.27 in the 1650 free. The Pioneers had a pair of 14th place finishes from Bethany Hoopman in the 200 yard backstroke (2:17.48) and Ashley McBride in the 200 yard butterfly (2:31.73). Hoopman finished 19th in the 100 backstroke (1:02.27). The Pioneers also received solid individual performances from Christine Gee-16th 200 yard backstroke (2:28.89), Vanessa Smith-18th 200 yard backstroke (2:37.11), and Jill Lothian-28th 50 yard free (25.47). The Pioneers performed well in the relays. The foursome of McBride, Perez, Brenda O'Connor, and Sami Hernandez finished eighth in the 800 yard freestyle with a time of 8:25.68. The Pioneers received a ninth place effort in the 200 yard medley relay from the foursome of O'Connor, Melissa Grottkau, McBride, and Lothian. The foursome of Hoopman, Grottkau, McBride, and Olina Wibroe-Benson placed 10th in the 400 medley relay.
CAL STATE EAST BAY FINISHES SEVENTH IN NORTHWEST CONFERENCE INVITATIONAL
The Pioneers finished seventh in the Northwest Conference Invitational on November 20-21. Freshman Bethany Hoopman had a solid meet taking fifth in the 100 backstroke, sixth in the 200 yard backstroke and seventh place in the 200 IM. Senior captain Melissa Grottkau finished 8th in the 100 yard breastroke and 11th in the 200 breastroke. Senior Jillian Lothian took 5th in the 50 freestyle. Junior Sami Hernandez took 12th in the 200 freestyle and 14th in the 100 freestyle. Freshman Ashley McBride was eighth in the 500 yard free, 15th in the 200 butterfly, and 9th in the 100 butterfly. Freshman Sarah Hurtubise was 16th in the 200 IM. Freshman Brenda O'Connor finished 14th in the 500 freestyle. The Pioneers received a pair of ninth place finishes from Jenni Perez in the 1650 free and Olina Wibroe-Benson in the 100 yard freestyle. Wibroe-Benson placed 2nd in the 50 freestyle. The 800 freestyle relay (Hernandez, McBride, O'Connor, Perez) took 4th place; the 400 medley relay (Hoopman, Grottkau. McBride, Wibroe-Benson) took 8th place; and the 200 medley relay (Hoopman, Hurtubise, McBride, Lothian) took 4th place. On December 11th-14th, the women's swim team will be traveling to Long Beach to compete in the Finis Invitational.
OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES HIGHLIGHT PIONEER WOMEN'S SWIM TEAM SHOWING IN BAY AREA INVITATIONAL
Some outstanding individual performances highlighted the Pioneers showing in the Bay Area Invitational on November 13-14. Bethany Hoopman had a solid two-day meet as she placeed second in the 50 and 100 yard backstroke. Ashley McBride also enjoyed an outstanding meet with a second place showing in the 100 yard butterfly and third place effort in the 100 IM. Olina Wibroe-Benson and Jillian Lothian finished first and second respectively in the 50 freestyle. The Pioneers performed well in the relays finishing second in the 200 yard medley and third in the 400 yard medley.
CAL STATE EAST BAY WOMEN'S SWIM TEAM HAS GOOD SHOWING AGAINST FRESNO PACIFIC
On November 7th, the CSUEB swimmers headed down to Fresno, to compete in a dual meet against the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific. The Pioneers lost to the Sunbirds 125-77. There were multiple first place finishes for the Pioneers, which included: Jillian Lothian in the 50 freestyle, Ashley McBride in the 100 butterfly, Olina Wilbroe-Benson in the 100 freestyle, and Bethany Hoopman in the 100 backstroke.
CAL STATE EAST BAY WOMEN'S SWIM TEAM RECORDS IMPRESSIVE DUAL MEET VICTORY OVER MILLS COLLEGE
The Pioneer women's swim team opened the 2009-10 campaign on a positive note by posting an impressive dual meet victory over Mills College on October 24. Cal State East Bay captured nine events and both relays en route to the dual meet win. Freshman ASHLEY MCBRIDE, from Irvington High School, won the 100 fly and the 500 free. Freshman BETHANY HOOPMAN captured the 200 IM and 100 back. VANESSA SMITH (1000 free), SAMI HERNANDEZ (200 free), OLINA WIBROE-BENSON (50 free), KELLY DELEON (100 free), and MELISSA GROTTKAU (100 breast) were all victorious. The Pioneers won the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.
2009-10 CAL STATE EAST BAY WOMEN'S SWIMMING PREVIEW
The CSUEB 2009-10 women's swim team has five returning swimmers , four of which were National Qualifiers last season. Returning swimmers include sophomores KIRSTEN PALM and CHRISTINE GEE, junior and team captain SAMI HERNANDEZ, senior JILLIAN LOTHIAN, and senior team captain MELISSA GROTTKAU. As the women enter their first season as a NCAA Division II program, they have brought in twelve new swimmers, assistant coach CORY AUDIAT, and volunteer MIKE JUFIAR. The team is excited about their inaugural year, and upcoming swim meets. This season the team will be traveling to Oakland, San Jose, Fresno, Long Beach, Oregon, and Colorado. The Pioneers home opener will be on October 24th at noon against Mills College.
PIONEER SWIM TEAM OPENS 2009-10 SEASON ON OCTOBER 24 WITH HOME MEET AGAINST MILLS COLLEGE
The Pioneer women's swim team opens the 2009-10 season with a home meet against Mills College. The first event will begin at noon. Cal State East Bay will be led this season by seniors MELISSA GROTTKAU (IM/BR), JILLIAN LOTHIAN (FREE) and junior SAMI HERNANDEZ (FREE-MD).
