JACKIE RANDOLPH-KELLY PARIS NAMED AVCA ALL-AMERICANS/CAL STATE EAST BAY WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM CONCLUDES SUCCESSFUL SEASON WITH DEFEAT TO CAL LUTHERAN IN NCAA DIVISION III WEST REGION POST-SEASON TOURNAMENT
Jackie Randolph was named 2008 American Volleyball Coaches Association first team All-American on November 18. Kelly Paris received honorable mention recognition. Randolph was also named Association of Division III Independents All Independent Women's Volleyball Team Player of the Year. Paris received first team honors while Roxanne Neely was named to the second team. A successful season came to an end for the Pioneer women's volleyball team as they were defeated by Cal Lutheran 25-22, 25-22, 25-18 in the second round of the NCAA III West Regionals at the University of LaVerne on November 14. Jackie Randolph, the Pioneers attack leader this season, led the team 11 kills. Danielle Hoversten had five kills and a .312 hitting percentage. Roxanne Neely recorded 12 assists and was the Pioneers leader on defense with 13 digs. "Our team was a step behind Cal Lutheran all night," said Pioneer Coach Jim Spagle. "We had a tough time relaxing on the court." I'm proud of the way our team performed all season." This was a great group of athletes to work with." Cal State East Bay concluded its season with a record of 29-5.
For the 11th straight season, the Pioneer women's volleyball team competed in the NCAA Division III Women's West Regional Championships hosted by University of LaVerne on November 13-15. The Pioneers finished the 2008 season with a record of 29-5. For the 13th straight season, the Pioneers won 20 or more matches. Cal State East Bay, ranked 13th nationally in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, won 24 of its last 26 matches and were 13-0 at home. Jackie Randolph, named Association of Division III Independents September Female Athlete of the Month, led the Pioneers with 409 kills and a .310 hitting percentage. Randolph was second on the team with 415 digs. Kelly Paris, with 251 kills, had a .293 hitting percentage and 44 blocks. Libero Lauren Massa had 522 digs. Setter Roxanne Neely had 803 assists and a team-best 52 service aces.
PIONEERS CONCLUDE PERFECT HOME RECORD WITH 3-0 WIN OVER DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY
Cal State East Bay concluded a perfect 13-0 home record with a 25-18, 25-7, 25-19 victory over Dominican University on November 5. Jackie Randolph led the Pioneers with 11 kills and recorded her 18th double-double of the season with 15 digs. Danielle Hoversten had seven kills and a .462 hitting Percentage while Cassandra Baxter recorded two block solos. Christy contributed to the Pioneer Victory with five kills and 10 digs.
PIONEERS IMPROVE TO 28-4 WITH 3-0 VICTORY OVER CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY
The Pioneers improved to 28-4 with a 25-17, 27-25, 26-24 victory over Chapman University on November 1. Jackie Randolph led the Pioneers with 18 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Kelly Paris and Alexa Antoni each had 11 kills. Antoni added two service aces. Lauren Massa contributed to the Pioneers victory with 18 digs.
CAL STATE EAST BAY DEFEATS CAL PAC CHAMPION MENLO COLLEGE 3-0
Cal State East Bay defeated Cal Pac Champion Menlo College 25-22, 25-15, 25-20 on October 29. Alexa Antoni started at outside hitter and responded with a team-high 12 kills, a .345 hitting percentage, and four service aces. Ariel Ajagu contributed to the Pioneer victory with 10 kills and .412 hitting percentage. Kelly Paris hit for a .263 hiting percentage with six kills. The Pioneers received good production off the bench from Audrey Faloona with two block solos and Kathryn Friend with three kills in five attempts.
PIONEERS POST 3-1 RECORD IN U. WISCONSIN-LACROSSE TOURNAMENT
The Pioneers won 3 out of 4 matches in the U. Wisconsin-LaCrosse Tournament on October 24-25. On October 24, the Pioneers opened tournament play with a 25-23, 25-14, 25-18 victory over Simpson College. Lauren Massa had a match-high four service aces. The Pioneers made it 20 consecutive wins with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over host UW La Crosse. The scores were 25-20, 19-25, 21-25, 25-12, 15-11. Christy Stuart came off the bench to record four service aces and 10 digs. Jackie Randolph recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs. Cal State's 20-match winning streak came to an end on October 25 with a 3-2 defeat to UW-Oshkosh. The scores were 25-23, 24-26, 20-25, 25-22, 12-15. Jackie Randolph had another double-double with 19 kills and 11 digs. Dani Morales had 25 assists and added 10 digs. Libero Lauren Massa had 16 digs. The Pioneers concluded tournament play with a 3-1 win over Luther College. The scores were 22-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-16. Alexa Antoni had a solid match as she recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. Jackie Randolph had her third double-double of the tournament with 11 kills and 13 digs.

Jackie Randolph recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs. Libero Lauren Massa was solid on defense for the Pioneers with 18 digs.
PIONEERS WIN 17TH STRAIGHT MATCH IN VICTORY OVER U.C. SANTA CRUZ
The Pioneers defeated U.C. Santa Cruz 25-16, 25-22, 25-23 for their 17th straight victory on October 17. Jackie Randolph recorded a match-high 18 kills and a .425 hitting percentge. Randolph completed a double-double with 18 digs. Roxanne Neely had three services while Kelly Paris contributed to the Pioneer victory with six kills and two block solos.
PIONEERS BEAT NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR TO EXTEND WIN STREAK TO 16 MATCHES
Cal State East Bay made it 16 straight victories with a 3-1 win over visiting Notre Dame de Namur on October 14. The scores were 25-20, 25-18, 24-26, 25-17. Ariel Ajagu led the Pioneers with 10 kills, a .389 hitting percentage, and three block solos. Roxanne Neely had 24 assists and a match-high five service aces.
CAL STATE EAST BAY GOES 4-0 IN PIONEER WILD WEST TOURNAMENT
The Pioneers went 4-0 in the Wild West Tournament on October 10-11. On October 10, Cal State East Bay defeated U.C. Santa Cruz 25-17, 25-12, 25-16 and College of Mt St Joseph 27-25, 25-21, 28-26. The Pioneers concluded Tournament action on October 11 with a pair of victories over Bowdoin College 25-17, 25-16, 25-21 and Cal Lutheran 25-13, 19-25, 25-15, 25-17. For the Tournament, Jackie Randolph had 58 kills, a .360 hitting percentage and 78 digs. Danielle Hoversten had 32 kills while Roxanne Neely recorded 11 service aces.
PIONEERS DEFEAT MILLS AND MENLO COLLEGE TO EXTEND WINNING STREAK TO 11
The Pioneers extended their winning streak to 11 matches by defeating Mills College 3-0:25-15, 25-12, 25-15 and Menlo College 25-17, 25-19, 25-22. Katie Gellerman with nine kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Lauren Massa was solid on defense with 24 digs. Jackie Randolph and Kelly Paris were instrumental in the win over Menlo College. Randolph had 15 kills and a .394 hitting percentage. She completed a double-double with 10 digs. Paris recorded 12 kills while hitting for a .391 percentage. Katie Gellerman contributed to the Pioneer victory with seven kills and two service aces.

Cal State East Bay defeated Whittier College 25-15, 25-10, 20-25, 25-15 and U.C. Santa Cruz 25-18, 25-15, 25-22 in the U.C. Santa Cruz Tournament on September 27. Roxanne Neely had 19 assists and 12 digs in the win over Whittier College. In the victory over U.C. Santa Cruz, Jackie Randolph recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 18 digs.
PIONEERS MAKE IT SEVEN STRAIGHT VICTORIES WITH WIN OVER DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY
The Pioneers made it seven straight victories with a 25-12, 25-17, 25-21 win over Dominican University on September 24. Jackie Randolph led the Pioneers with nine kills and a .350 hitting percentage. Danielle Hoversten followed with eight kills and a team-best .583 hitting percentage. Hattie Waybright had a team-high three service aces.
CAL ST EAST BAY DEFEATS PACIFIC UNION COLLEGE AND SIMPSON UNIVERSITY-POSTS 4-0 RECORD IN CAL LUTHERAN TOURNAMENT
Cal State East Bay recorded a 25-7, 25-9, 25-10 victory over Pacific Union College on September 16. The Pioneers had 20 service aces led by Simone Sagapolu with seven and Daniella Morales with five. As a team, the Pioneers hit for a .491 percentage. Hattie Waybright led the Pioneers with seven kills. The Pioneers defeated Simpson University 25-15, 25-12, 25-15 on September 18. Jackie Randolph led the Pioneers with nine kills while setter Roxanne Neely had 27 assists. Cal State East Bay posted a 4-0 record in the Cal Lutheran Tournament on September 12-13. On September 12, Cal State East Bay defeated Pomona-Pitzer 25-18, 26-24, 22-25, 26-24 and Redlands 25-8, 25-14, 25-13. In the victory over Pomona-Pitzer, Kelly Paris and Danielle Hoversten had 13 and 9 kills respectively. In the Redlands win, Jackie Randolph had a team-high 12 kills. The Pioneers concluded tournament play on September 13 with a pair of wins over Whitworth University 25-11, 25-14, 25-16 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 25-10, 25-12, 27-25. Jackie Randolph had 14 kills and a .414 hitting percentage while Kelly Paris hit .412 with 9 kills in the victory over Whitworth University. In the win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Jackie Randolph had 13 kills and a .590 hitting percentage. Christy Stuart had 7 kills and 13 digs while Roxanne Neely recorded 3 service aces and 10 digs to contribute to the Pioneer victory.
PIONEERS GO 1-3 IN PUGET SOUND TOURNAMENT
The Pioneers finished 1-3 at the University of Puget Sound Tournament on September 5-6. On September 5, the Pioneers lost to Trinity University(Texas) 3-1: 21-25, 25-19, 23-25, 17-25 and University of Puget Sound 3-0: 20-25, 22-25, 17-25. On September 6, Cal State East Bay defeated Redlands 3-1: 25-20, 20-25, 25-18, 25-16. Katie Gellerman came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with 13 kills. Jackie Randolph followed with 12 kills while Roxanne Neely had 40 assists. Cal State East Bay concluded tournament play with a 3-1 defeat to University of La Verne 3-1: 25-17, 16-25, 20-25, 28-30.
PIONEER WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM FINISHES 4-0 IN PACIFIC UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT
Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team opened the 2008 campaign on a positive note by going 4-0 in the Pacific University Tournament (Forest Grove, Oregon) on August 30-31. On August 30, the Pioneers opened tournament play with a 3-1 victory over Pacific Lutheran. The scores were 19-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21. Jackie Randolph recorded a team-high 21 kills while Christy Stuart added 11 attacks and hit for a .290 percentage. Randolph was also solid on defense with 19 digs. Setter Roxanne Neely had 46 assists. The Pioneers defeated host Pacific University 3-0: 25-20, 25-19, 25-19. Kelly Paris hit for a .500 percentage while recording 13 kills. Libero Lauren Massa was solid on defense with 18 digs. The Pioneers concluded tournament action on August 31 with a pair of victories over Christopher Newport 3-0: 25-18, 26-24, 25-23 and Puget Sound 3-1: 25-14, 20-25, 25-14, 25-21. In the victory over Christopher Newport, Christy Stuart led three Pioneer players with 12 kills. Stuart recorded a double-double with 12 digs. Jackie Randolph followed with 11 kills and completed a double-double with 14 digs. Kelly Paris, who hit for a .421 percentage, had 10 kills. In the Pioneers win over Puget Sound, Jackie Randolph had 22 kills, a .327 hitting percentage, four service aces, and 22 digs. Kelly Paris had 16 kills and a .394 hitting percentage. Audrey Faloona had seven kills and hit for a .429 percentage while Lauren Massa contributed to the Pioneer victory with 17 digs and two service aces. Christy Stuart had seven kills and 17 digs.
2008 CAL STATE EAST BAY WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW
Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team will field another strong and talented team for the 2008 campaign. The Pioneers, ranked 12th in the 2008 AVCA Coaches Poll, return seven players from the 2007 team which finished 29-5 and competed in NCAA III post-season competition for the 10th straight season. Another solid recruiting year landed new players expected to contribute towards a successful season. "This is a special team," claimed Pioneer coach Jim Spagle entering his 13th year at the helm of the Pioneers. "The excellent depth at every position is the best I've had in 13 years of coaching this team." Senior Jackie Randolph, an honorable mention American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American, first team NCAA III All-West Region, and first team Association of Division III Independents first team performer, returns at outside hitter. Randolph set a school record last year with 512 kills. "Jackie is an athlete who can do so many things on the volleyball court," Spagle said. "She should have a great year." Five talented newcomers expected to contribute at outside hitter include Alexa Antoni (Ontario Christian High School), Christy Stuart (Sacramento City College) , Katie Gellerman (Amador High School), Stephany Vanhorn ( St. Joseph High School), and Hattie Waybright (South High School). According to coach Spagle, "Alexa Antoni is a brilliant athlete who plays the game on the edge." "Christy Stuart has all the intangibles and does the little things to be a good volleyball player." "Katie Gellerman is a physical,hard-nose player who will make an impact as a freshman." "Stephany Vanhorn has a nice presence on the court while Hattie Waybright demonstrates tremendous skill on attacking a volleyball." Sophomore Krista Frausto rounds out the Pioneers outside hitters. "With a year under her belt, I expect Frausto to make a contribution to the team," Spagle said. At rightside hitter, the Pioneers return senior captain Kelly Paris, an honorable mention NCAA III All-West Region selection and first team Association of Division III Independents honoree. Paris enjoyed a solid junior campaign with 366 kills, a team-best .302 hitting percentage, and 58 blocks. "Kelly is a great kid to coach and makes excellent adjustments on the court," Spagle said. Danielle Hoversten, a transfer from Cuesta College, is expected to see action at rightside hitter. "Hoversten hits a heavy ball and makes good adjustments on the court,"Spagle said. "She has the potential to be a real good player". Kathryn Friend, with 103 kills, 39 digs and 41 blocks as a freshman last season, will contribute at rightside hitter. "Friend is a lefthander on the rightside,"Spagle said. "She will make an impact for us this season." The Pioneers will carry four outstanding athletes at middleblocker. Ariel Ajagu, who enjoyed an outstanding freshman campaign with U.C. Santa Cruz, will see plenty of action at the middleblocker position. "Ajagu will have a great impact on the court," Spagle said. "She will be an outstanding middlehitter for us." Cassie Baxter, with 36 kills and 17 blocks as a sophomore, will compete for playing time at middleblocker. "Baxter has worked very hard to become an excellent middlehitter," Spagle said. "She doing the little things on the court to be an impact player in the middle." Two newcomers expected to contribute at middleblocker include Audrey Faloona, from Monterey Peninsula College and freshman Allison Doughty from C.K. McClatchy High School. Spagle had these comments about Faloona and Doughty: "Faloona is a great kid who is willing to learn and will push for a starting position. "Doughty is a brilliant student who listens carefully and makes outstanding adjustments to improve her game." The Pioneers will carry two setters this season: sophomore Roxanne Neely and junior Dani Morales. Neely contributed to a successful 2007 Pioneer season with 29 kills, 24 service aces and 182 digs. Morales had 782 assists during the 2006 campaign. "Neely is a strong, imposing figure on the court," Spagle said. "She has made tremendous strides in the spring and will make an impact this season." "Dani will help us at the setter position this season, " Spagle said. "She delivers a very hitable ball." At libero, the Pioneers return sophomore Lauren Massa. As a freshman, Massa was named honorable mention NCAA III All-West Region, Association of Division III Independents Newcomer of the Year, and Association of Division III Independents October Athlete of the Month. She set a CSUEB school record with 700 digs. "Massa is the best libero I've ever had," Spagle said. "She is a great contributor both on and off the court." The Pioneers landed three solid freshmen backrow players in Simone Sagapolu (Moreau High School), Nikki Cheong (Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) and Nichole Codoni (Terra Linda High School). "Sagapolu is rock solid and has a great presence on the court," Spagle said. "Cheong is a defensive specialist who is quick and make plays while Codoni is an outstanding defensive player." The Pioneers will face six ranked teams in the first two weeks of the 2008 season. "We will be challenged during the first two weeks of the season, Spagle said. "We're taking one match at a time. Our goal is to reach the Regionals and the NCAA III Nationals."

The 2007 Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team concluded another successful season with a 29-5 record. For the third time in school history, the Cal State East Bay women's volleyball program hosted the 2007 NCAA Division III West Regionals. The Pioneers hosted the West Regionals in 2001 and 2004. Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team was ranked 12th in the latest AVCA Coaches poll. The Pioneers were 11-1 at home and for the 12th consecutive season, won 20 or more matches. Cal St East Bay had a pair of 10 and 11 match winning streaks this season. The Pioneers had 1825 kills and a .232 hitting percentage. Their opponents had a .137 hitting percentage. The Pioneers had 253 service aces compared to 146 for their opponents. Jackie Randolph had a team-best and school record 512 kills followed by Beverly Hazell with 394. Hazell had 52 service aces. Kelly Paris enjoyed a solid junior campaign with 366 kills, a team-best .302 hitting percentage, and 58 blocks. Libero Lauren Massa, named Association of Division III Independents October Female Athlete of the Month, was solid on defense with 700 digs. Alyssa Chang had 1013 assists,a team-best 53 service aces and 284 digs. Jackie Randolph was named Honorable Mention AVCA Division III All-American and first team All-West Region. Lauren Massa and Kelly Paris received honorable mention All-West Region recognition. Randolph was also selected to the Association of Division III Independents All-Independent first team. Paris was also a first team selection. Massa was named Newcomer of the Year and second team All Independent. Hazell and Jessica Juarez were honorable mention selections.
The Pioneers went 1-1 in the 2007 NCAA Division III West Regionals. Cal State East Bay opened regional play with a 3-1 victory over Colorado College. The scores were 30-25, 30-15, 28-30, 30-18. Jackie Randolph and Kelly Paris had 19 and 18 kills respectively. Randolph completed a double-double with 26 digs. Libero Lauren Massa recorded a match-high 28 digs. A successful season ended for the Pioneers as they lost to U. of La Verne 3-2: 30-26, 23-30, 34-32, 28-30, 13-15. Jackie Randolph led the Pioneers with 24 kills and 19 digs. Beverly Hazell had a solid match with 19 kills, four service aces, and 19 digs. Kelly Paris had a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Lauren Massa led all back row players with 35 digs.
