CAL STATE EAST BAY VOLLEYBALL TEAM CONCLUDES 2009 SEASON

Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team concluded the 2009 season with an overall record of 10-21. The Pioneers finished in a seventh place tie in the CCAA with an 8-14 record. Cal State East Bay finished 6-5 at home. The Pioneers finished 4-9 in 3-set matches, 3-5 in 4-set matches, and 3-7 in 5-set matches. Cal State East Bay averaged 11.57 kills, 15.36 digs, and 1.87 blocks a set. SUKHJIT ATHWAL was the team leader in kills (281) and kills per set (2.55). BRIANNA BRYANT averaged 1.96 kills per set and led the Pioneers with 99 blocks including 18 solo. ROXANNE NEELY had 1.69 kills, 5.92 sets, and 2.59 digs a set. Libero LAUREN MASSA had 500 digs, an average of 4.27 a set. The Pioneer received good production from defensive specialist Katie Glomb with 14 service aces and 142 digs.


PIONEER WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM DROPS FOUR-SET MATCH TO SONOMA STATE IN SEASON FINALE

The Pioneer women's volleyball team concluded the 2009 campaign with a four-set defeat to Sonoma State on November 14. The scores were 24-26, 25-20, 19-25, 18-25. In the first set, the Pioneers held a 24-19 advantage on Katie Gellerman's kill. Sonoma State scored seven unanswered points including an over lap against the Pioneers to win the first set. Trailing 2-0, the Pioneers bounced back in the third set taking a 20-14 lead on a kill by Brianna Bryant. Sukhjit accounted for two of the Pioneers last five points including a kill to end the third set. Kayla Woods kill gave the Pioneers a 17-16 lead in the fourth set. Sonoma State outscored Cal State East Bay 9-1 to take the fourth set and the match. Athwal led all Pioneer hitters with 14 kills. Woods came off the bench to record nine kills and a .421 hitting percentage. Roxanne Neely played a solid match with six kills, 31 assists, and nine digs.


PIONEER WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM WINS EIGHTH CCAA MATCH FOLLOWING FOUR-SET VICTORY OVER HUMBOLDT STATE

The Pioneer women's volleyball team notched their eighth CCAA victory of the season following a 3-1 win over Humboldt State on November 13. The scores were 25-19, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22. In the third set, the Pioneers took a 20-12 lead on a kill by Sukhjit Athwal. A pair of Brianna Bryant kills accounted for the Pioneers final two points. A kill by Ariel Ajagu gave the Pioneers a 21-20 advantage in the fourth set. Humboldt State tied the set 21-21. Three consecutive points including kills by Ajagu and Athwal gave the Pioneers a 24-21 lead. Cara Crowder's kill sealed the match for the Pioneers. Athwal and Bryant had 13 and 12 kills respectively. Roxanne Neely had 47 assists. Katie Glomb had a match-high 23 digs.


PIONEER WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM WINS DRAMATIC FIVE-SET VICTORY OVER SAN FRANCISCO STATE

Playing one of their best matches of the season, the Pioneer women's volleyball team defeated San Francisco State 3-2 on November 7. The scores were 25-20, 17-25, 23-25, 25-23, 16-14. Trailing 2-1, the Pioneers cameback in the fourth set. A service error and an attack error by the Gators, gave the Pioneers a 23-21 advantage. A kill by Cara Crowder maintained a 24-22 lead for the Pioneers. Brianna Bryant's kill sealed the fourth set for the Pioneers. In the fifth set, Bryant had a kill to give the Pioneers a 14-13 lead. A kill by the Gators tied the score 14-14. A pair of attack errors by the Gators enabled the Pioneers to win the five-set thriller. Bryant led the Pioneers with 18 kills and a .484 hitting percentage. Katie Gellerman had 14 kills and completed a double-double with 17 digs. Crowder contributed to the Pioneer victory with 11 kills. Katie Glomb and Sukhjit were both solid on defense with 22 and 21 digs respectively.


PIONEER WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM DROPS FIVE-SET MATCH TO CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY

The Pioneer women's volleyball team lost to Cal State Monterey Bay in five sets. The scores were 21-25, 26-24, 20-25, 25-21, 12-15. The Pioneers scored the last four points including a pair of Katie Glomb service aces to win the fourth set. In the fifth set, the Pioneers closed the gap 13-11 on a Roxanne Neely kill. Cal State Monterey Bay recorded a kill to win the fifth set and the match. Sukhjit Athwal had 15 kills followed by Brianna Bryant with 11 attacks. Glomb had three service aces and was outstanding on defense with 19 digs.


CAL STATE EAST BAY WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM DEFEATED BY #2 RANKED U.C. SAN DIEGO IN THREE SETS

The Pioneer women's volleyball team dropped a three-set match to #2 ranked U.C. San Diego on November 4. The scores were 25-16, 25-20, 25-18. In the second set, the Pioneers had an early 9-3 advantage, only to see the Tritons tie the score 15-15. U.C. San Diego went on a 10-5 run to capture the second set. Cal State East Bay and U.C. San Diego were tied 15-15 in the third set. The Tritons outscored the Pioneers 10-3 to take the third set and the match. Katie Gellerman had six kills and a .267 hitting percentage for the Pioneers. Roxanne Neely and Sukhjit Athwal had five and four kills respectively. U.C. San Diego, which hit for a .316 percentage, is now 17-1 in the CCAA and 25-1 overall. Cal State East Bay stands at 6-12 in conference and 8-19 overall.


PIONEER VOLLEYBALL TEAM SUFFERS TOUGH FIVE-SET MATCH DEFEAT TO STANISLAUS STATE

The Pioneer women's volleyball team suffered a tough five-set match defeat to Stanislaus State on October 31. Cal State East Bay won the first two sets 25-13, 25-22. Stanislaus State captured the third and fourth sets by scores of 27-25 and 25-16. In the fifth set, the Pioneers took a 9-6 lead on a Katie Glomb service ace and maintained a 14-13 advantage on an Ariel Ajagu kill. Stanislaus State scored the last three points to win the hard earned match. Sukhjit Athwal led the Pioneers with 16 kills while Ajagu had 14 attacks and a .344 hitting percentage. Athwal completed a double-double with 11 digs. Roxanne Neely and Glomb each had three service aces.


PIONEER VOLLEYBALL TEAM PLAYS HARD IN THREE-SET MATCH DEFEAT TO CHICO STATE

In a hard-fought match from the start, the Pioneer women's volleyball team lost to host Chico State in three sets. The scores were 25-21, 25-20, and 28-26. The Pioneers trailed 9-3 in the first set and cut the Wildcats lead to 24-21. Cal State East Bay committed an attack error to give Chico State the 25-21 victory. In the second set, the score was tied 12-12 when Chico State went on an 11-5 run to secure the win. The Pioneers led 20-18 in the third set, only to see the Wildcats comeback and take a 24-21 advantage. Cal State East Bay battled back to tie the set 24-24 and was able to stave off two match points as the score remained tied 26-26. The Wildcats recorded back-to-back kills to take the hard earned victory. Ariel Ajagu had seven kills and a .500 hitting percentage, Cara Crowder also had seven kills for the Pioneers. Roxanne Neely had four service aces.


PIONEERS DROP A NON-CCAA FOUR-SET MATCH TO NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR

Cal State East Bay stands at 8-16 for the season following a 3-1 setback to non-conference opponent Notre Dame de Namur on October 27. The Pioneers won the first set 25-17, but lost the next three sets 25-20, 25-23, 25-23. Both teams recorded 52 kills. Ariel Ajagu had a match-high 15 kills and a .364 hitting percentage. Sukhjit Athwal and Krystal Robinson followed with 11 and 10 kills respectively. The Pioneers had 71 digs led by libero Lauren Massa with 18. Katie Gellerman had 11 digs.


PIONEER WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM DEFEATS CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS IN FOUR SETS

The Pioneer women's volleyball team improved to 6-9 in CCAA play and 8-15 overall following a 3-1 victory over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills in October 24. Roxanne Neely and Ariel Ajagu each had 11 kills for the Pioneers. Neely added 22 assists. Amanda Limeberger had a solid match with 26 assists and 10 digs. Brianna Bryant had six block assists.


PIONEER WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM FALLS TO #22 CAL STATE LOS ANGELES IN THREE SETS

Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team lost to #22 Cal State Los Angeles in three sets on October 21. The scores were 25-20, 25-20, 25-12. The Pioneers took a 13-11 lead in the first set on a kill by Krystal Robinson. The Golden Eagles scored three unanswered points to take a 14-13 advantage and never looked back in the first set. Cal State East Bay rallied in the second set to trail 23-20 on a Katie Gellerman kill. Cal State Los Angeles scored the final two points to take the second set. The Golden Eagles never trailed in the third set improving their CCAA record to 12-3 and 16-6 overall. Brianna Bryant led Cal State East Bay (5-9 CCAA, 7-15 overall) with six kills and four blocks.


PIONEER WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM DEFEATS VISITING CAL POLY POMONA IN THREE SETS

The Pioneer women's volleyball team recorded their fifth victory in CCAA play by defeating Cal Poly Pomona 3-0 on October 17. The scores were 25-21, 25-17, 27-25. Cal State East Bay overcame a 17-10 deficit in the third set to tie the match 25-25 on a block by Brianna Bryant. Roxanne Neely had a kill to give the Pioneers a 26-25 advantage. Amanda Limeberger served an ace to win the match for the Pioneers. Neely led all Pioneer hitters with 10 kills. Bryant and Sukhjit followed with nine kills each. Krystal Robinson contributed to the Pioneer victory with seven kills and four blocks.


CAL STATE EAST BAY DROPS THREE-SET MATCH TO #2 RANKED CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO

The Pioneer women's volleyball team played a competitive match in a three-set defeat to #2 Cal State San Bernardino on October 16. The scores were 20-25, 24-26, 19-25. The Pioneers tied the Coyotes 24-24 in the second set on a kill by Brianna Bryant. CSU-San Bernardino scored the final two points to win the second set. On the third set, the Pioneers narrowed the score 20-19 only to see Cal State San Bernardino record five unanswered points to win the match. Roxanne Neely led all Pioneer hitters with seven kills. Katie Gellerman followed with six kills and 13 digs. Bryant had five blocks.


PIONEERS DEFEAT HUMBOLDT STATE IN FIVE SETS

The Pioneer women's volleyball team improved to 4-7 in CCAA play and 6-13 overall following a 3-2 victory over Humboldt State on October 10. The scores were 22-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-9. ARIEL AJAGU led a balanced Pioneer hitting attack with 10 kills. BRIANNA BRYANT and ROXANNE NEELY followed with nine kills each. KATIE GELLERMAN and SUKHJIT ATHWAL had eight kills.

PIONEERS FALL TO #17 SONOMA STATE IN THREE SETS

The Pioneer women's volleyball team dropped a three-set match to #17 Sonoma State on October 9. The scores were 25-23, 25-22, 25-15. There were 23 tied scores and 10 lead changes in the first two sets. ARIEL AJAGU had a solid match with nine kills, a .750 hitting percentage and four blocks. ROXANNE NEELY and SUKHJIT ATHWAL each had eight kills. Neely added 13 assists and 10 digs.


PIONEER WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM DEFEATS CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY IN FOUR SETS

The Pioneer women's volleyball team improved to 3-6 in CCAA action and 5-12 overall following a 3-1 vicotry over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay on October 3. The scores were 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 25-17. Ariel Ajagu had a kill and Roxanne Neely recorded a service ace to conclude the Pioneers first set win. In the third set victory, Cara Crowder came off the bench to record five kills followed by Sukhjit Athwal with four attacks. The Pioneers hit for a .355 percentage in the fourth and deciding set. Crowder had seven kills while Leta Pickett hit the game winner in the fourth set. The Pioneers had four players with 10 or more kills led by Athwal with 17. Athwal completed a double-double with 19 digs. Crowder had 12 kills and .333 hitting percentage. Neely played another solid match with 10 kills, a .409 hitting percentage, 31 assists, and completed a double-double with 11 digs. Pickett had 10 kills and a .409 hitting percentage. "This was the best team effort of the season," said Pioneer coach Jim Spagle. "Everyone did a good job and we accomplished things on the court that we're capable of doing."


PIONEER WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM DROPS TOUGH FIVE SET MATCH TO VISITING SAN FRANCISCO STATE

The Pioneer women's volleyball team lost in five sets to visiting San Francisco State 3-2 on October 2. The scores were 25-16, 25-27, 16-25, 25-13, 5-15. The score was tied 22 times during the match. Sukhjit Athwal recorded a double-double for the Pioneers with 14 kills and 11 digs. Roxanne Neely recorded seven kills, 19 assists, and 10 digs. Brianna Bryant led the Pioneers in the middle with five blocks. Lauren Massa was outstanding on defense with a match-high 28 digs.


PIONEER VOLLEYBALL TEAM HOSTS SAN FRANCSICO STATE, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY FOLLOWING TWO CCAA VICTORIES

The Pioneers, 2-5 in CCAA play and 4-11 overall, will host San Francisco State (5-2 CCAA, 12-3) on October 2 and CSU-Monterey Bay (2-5 CCAA, 6-8) on October 3. Both matches will begin at 7:00 p.m. After 15 matches, the Pioneers are averaging 11.6 kills and 14.7 digs a set. SUKHJIT ATHWAL leads the Pioneers with 2.58 kills per set. ROXANNE NEELY is having a solid junior campaign with 94 kills, a .241 hitting percentage, 5.62 assists and 3.00 digs a set. LAUREN MASSA continues to be a strong defensive specialist with 273 digs (4.71 dig/set). Massa is third in the CCAA and second overall in digs.

PIONEER VOLLEYBALL TEAM DEFEATS CHICO STATE IN THREE SETS

A tremendous team performance enabled the Pioneer women's volleyball team to defeat visiting Chico State 3-0. The scores were 29-27, 25-21, 25-22. Sophomore Katie Gellerman recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Gellerman had a pair of kills to end the second and third sets. Roxanne Neely had five kills, 19 assists and 10 digs. Ariel Ajagu had five kills and seven blocks including three solo.

"Our team played a great match," said Pioneer coach Jim Spagle. 'We stuck to the game plan and made great adjustments during the match."

PIONEER VOLLEYBALL NOTCHES FIRST CCAA WIN OF THE SEASON

A solid team effort enabled the Pioneer women's volleyball team to record their first CCAA victory of the season over visiting CSU-Stanislaus 3-0. The scores were 25-16, 25-20, 25-21. Roxanne Neely and Kitona Offord recorded 10 and nine kills respectively. Neely hit for a .474 average and added 19 assists and nine digs. Offord hit for a .429 percentage. Lauren Massa was outstanding on defense with 19 digs. "Winning our first CCAA match is a big relief," said Pioneer coach Jim Spagle. "Stanislaus State came back in the third set, but we kept our composure to win the match." Neely and Offord played great tonight. Massa was digging everything in sight."

PIONEERS DROP FOUR SET MATCH TO CAL STATE L.A.

Los Angeles, Calif. - The Pioneers finished 0-2 on their Southern California trip following a 3-1 defeat to Cal State L.A. The scores were 17-25, 21-25, 26-24, 20-25. Leta Pickett had 10 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Brianna Bryant had seven kills and a team-best seven blocks. Libero Lauren Massa recorded 18 digs.

PIONEERS FALL TO DOMINGUEZ HILLS IN FIVE SETS

CARSON, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team had Cal State Dominguez Hills on the ropes, taking the first two games before the Toros made a comeback and captured the win in five sets, 24-26, 16-25, 27-25, 25-23, 21-19. The Pioneers have now gone the distance four times this season and twice in the last three matches.Click for more


PIONEERS CONTINUE CCAA PLAY WITH A PAIR OF ROAD MATCHES

The Pioneers, with a CCAA record of 0-3 and on overall mark of 2-9, will play a pair of road CCAA matches against CSU-Dominguez Hills on September 18 and CSU-Los Angeles on September 19. The Pioneers have lost three 5-set matches this season. Cal State East Bay is averaging 11.42 kills per set and 13.67 digs per set. SUKHJIT ATHWAL tops the Pioneers with 2.74 kills per set followed by by BRIANNA BRYANT at 2.16. Bryant leads the Pioneers with 35 blocks. ROXANNE NEELY has 67 kills, 240 assists and a team-best 18 service aces.

PIONEERS SWEPT BY NCAA II RUNNER-UP CSU-SAN BERNARDINO

San Bernardino, Calif. - The Pioneers lost to 2008 NCAA II runner-up CSU-San Bernardino 25-13, 25-21, 25-18. Brianna Bryant had eight kills and five blocks for the Pioneers. Roxanne Neely added six kills, 12 assists, and five digs.

PIONEERS DROP FIVE SET MATCH TO CAL POLY POMONA

Pomona, Calif. - The Pioneers played a solid match in losing to Cal Poly Pomona 17-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-17, 13-15. In the second set victory, the Pioneers were led by SUKHJIT ATHWAL and CARA CROWDER with five and three kills respectively. In the fourth set victory, Ariel Ajagu led the Pioneer offensive attack with five kills. Athwal and Bryant followed Ajagu with four and three kills respectively. In the fifth set, the Pioneers took an 11-10 lead on a kill by Kitona Offord. Cal Poly Pomona scored the last two points in the fifth set to win the match. Crowder had three kills for the Pioneers in the fifth set. For the match, the Pioneers had four players with 10 or more kills. Athwal and Ajagu had 14 and 13 kills repectively. Crowder and Bryant followed with 12 and 11 kills. Roxanne Neely had a solid match with eight kills, a .500 hitting percentage, 31 assists, and 17 digs.

PIONEERS DROP CONFERENCE OPENER TO NO. 4 UC SAN DIEGO

HAYWARD, Calif. - Despite putting up a valiant effort against the No. 4-ranked team in the country, the Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team suffered a three-set defeat at the hands of UC San Diego in its conference and home opener on Wednesday night at Pioneer Gym. The Pioneers battled hard but fell to the Tritons, who kept their undefeated record intact with a 33-31, 25-19, 25-13, victory. Click for more
