PIONEERS FINISH FIFTH IN COLLEGIATE III WOMEN'S WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS
Cal State East Bay finished fifth in the Collegiate III Women's Water Polo Championship on May 1-3. The fifth place showing was the sixth consecutive season the Pioneers finished fifth or higher in the Collegiate III Championships. The Pioneers opened Collegiate III Championship play on May 1 with an 11-4 defeat to Pomona-Pitzer. The Pioneers only trailed 4-3 after two periods. Mary Rosa led the Pioneers in scoring with two goals. Brianna Finney and Jenna Casady accounted for the Pioneers two other scores. The Pioneers lost to U. of Redlands 11-10. The Pioneers trailed 5-1 after the first period and outscored Redlands 9-6 in the last three periods. Liz Warren, Mary Rosa, and Jenna Casady all scored twice for the Pioneers. On May 2, the Pioneers recorded a pair of victories over Washington and Jefferson 16-6 and Macalester 10-6. In the victory over Washington and Jefferson, Mary Rosa led all scorers with six goals. Brianna Finney and Liz Warren scored three and two goals respectively. Liz Warren and Jenna Casady each scored a pair of goals in the win over Macalester. The Pioneers captured fifth place in the championship on May 3 with a 12-5 victory over Washington and Jefferson. The Pioneers led the entire match and outscored Washington and Jefferson 5-1 in the final two periods. Mary Rosa and Lauren Griffin led the Pioneers with three goals each. Jenna Casady and Liz Warren followed with two goals. Jenna Casady and Mary Rosa were named to the All-Tournament Second Team. Brianna Finney received honorable mention recognition.
For the sixth consecutive season, the Pioneers competed in the National Collegiate III Women's Polo Championship. The Pioneers were the 2008 Collegiate III National Champions and placed in the top five in the championships the past six years. The Pioneers won 13 of their last 24 matches, were 18-17 for the season and finished 12-6 against Division III competition.
Jenna Casady was named Honorable Mention Women's Water Polo Association All-Conference. Casady leads the WWPA with 56 assists and is second with 75 steals. Ana Rosa tops the conference with 92 steals. Liz Warren and Mary Rosa are the fifth and sixth leading goal scorers in the conference with 69 and 66 respectively.
Mary Rosa was the Pioneers leading scorer with 89 goals. Liz Warren followed with 84 goals scored. Jenna Casady and Ana Rosa scored 56 and 49 goals respectively.
Cal State East Bay finished 10th in the Western Water Polo Association Women's Championship on April 24-26. The Pioneers opened championship play with a 13-11 defeat to CSU-Monterey Bay. Brianna Finney and Jenna Casady each scored three goals for the Pioneers. On April 25, the Pioneers defeated Chapman University 21-12. Mary Rosa and Liz Warren scored five and four goals respectively. Simone Jackson and Jenna Casady each scored three goals. Cal State East Bay concluded championship play on April 26 with a 13-7 defeat to CSU-San Bernardino. Jenna Casady, Ana Rosa, and Mary Rosa all scored twice for the Pioneers. The Pioneers lost their home finale on April 18 to Collegiate I CSU-Bakersfield 19-13. Simone Jackson played her best match of the season to lead the Pioneers in scoring with five goals. Ana Rosa followed with three goals while Mary Rosa and Lauren Griffin each scored twice. On April 15, the Pioneers lost to U.C. Santa Cruz 10-8. Cal State East Bay tied the match 8-8 in the fourth period on a goal by Ana Rosa. U.C. Santa Cruz scored the last two goals to win the match. Liz Warren led the Pioneers with three goals while Jenna Casady scored twice. On April 11, the Pioneers split a pair of road matches losing to Pomona-Pitzer 13-11 and defeating U. of LaVerne 18-9. On April 9, Cal State East Bay defeated Cal Tech 15-1. The Pioneers defeated Concordia Irvine 11-9 and CSU-Monterey Bay 9-7 on April 4. Mary Rosa scored four goals in the win over Concordia Irvine and added two more goals in the victory over CSU-Monterey Bay. At the Wheaton Tournament on March 27, Cal State East Bay opened tournament play with an 18-7 victory over host Wheaton College. Liz Warren led the Pioneer offensive attack with six goals. Jenna Gelet recorded a season-best three goals while Simone Jackson and Brianna Finney scored two each. The Pioneers defeated Carthage College 16-9. Liz Warren and Mary Rosa each scored four goals to lead the Pioneers. Ana Rosa, Lauren Griffin, and Jenna Casady all scored two goals. On March 28, the Pioneers defeated Macalester College 11-5. Jenna Casady scored three goals while Liz Warren, Ana Rosa, and Mary Rosa all scored twice. Cal State East Bay concluded tournament play with a 16-5 win over Loyola of Chicago. The Pioneers featured a balanced scoring attack led by Ana Rosa with three goals followed by Amanda Brown, Brianna Finney, Amber Gray, Mary Rosa, and Liz Warren with two each.
The Pioneers defeated CSU-Monterey Bay 13-7 on March 15. Mary Rosa and Jenna Casady scored five and four goals respectively to lead the Pioneers. Ana Rosa contributed to the Pioneer victory with two goals. The Pioneers received a solid performance from goalkeeper Lauren Merrill. Cal State East Bay lost to U.C. Santa Cruz 12-11 in overtime on March 14. Jenna Casady led the Pioneers with four goals scored. Simone Jackson, Liz Warren, and Brianna Finney all scored two goals. Ana Rosa, who scored a goal, led the Pioneers with four assists. Goalkeeper Lauren Merrill had six saves.
The Pioneers won three out of four matches at the Chapman Invitational on February 28-March 1. Cal State East Bay defeated Whittier College 12-7. Ana Rosa scored four goals followed by Liz Warren and Brianna Finney with three each. The Pioneers lost to Occidental College 9-8. Mary Rosa scored four goals while goalie Lauren Merrill recorded nine saves. On March 1, Cal State East Bay defeated CSU-San Bernardino for the first time in school history 11-9. Liz Warren and Ana Rosa each scored three goals to lead the Pioneers. Mary Rosa contributed to the Pioneer victory with two goals. The Pioneers overcame a 6-4 deficit in the third period to defeat host Chapman University 9-6. Mary Rosa led the Pioneers with five goals. Liz Warren added two goals.
Cal State East Bay defeated Cal Lutheran `15-12 in the rematch of the 2008 Collegiate III Championship match. Jenna Casady led the Pioneers with four goals scored. Mary Rosa and Liz Warren followed Casady with three each. Lauren Griffin contributed to the Pioneer victory with two goals. Ana Rosa, Brianna Finney, and Simone Jackson each scored a goal. The Pioneers received a solid outing from freshman goalkeeper TJ Blount. Cal State East Bay lost two games in the Sonoma State Tournament to Colorado State 10-6 and Sonoma State 10-7. Liz Warren scored four goals against Colorado State while Mary Rosa had four goals versus Sonoma State.
The Pioneers played four exciting matches in the CSU-Bakersfield Tournament on February 14-15. Cal State East Bay opened tournament play with a 10-7 defeat to Cal State Bakersfield. Mary Rosa and Ana Rosa each scored a pair of goals for the Pioneers. Liz Warren, Jenna Gelet, and Brianna Finney accounted for the Pioneers three other goals. The Pioneers recorded an 18-17 sudden death victory over Fresno Pacific. Liz Warren scored six goals including the match winner in sudden death. Mary Rosa also scored six goals for the victorious Pioneers. Jenna Casady and Ana Rosa each scored a pair of goals. The Pioneers lost to Colorado State 12-11 in sudden death. Cal State East Bay led 11-10 on a goal by Simone Jackson with 19 seconds left in the second overtime. Colorado State tied the match with a goal with one second left in the second overtime and won the match with a goal at the 3:29 mark. Liz Warren and Mary Rosa each scored three goals. The Pioneers concluded tournament play with a 16-8 defeat to U.C. Davis. Liz Warren led the Pioneers with three goals.

Jenna Casady and Liz Warren each scored twice for the Pioneers. Simone Jackson, Mary Rosa, and Jenna Gelet each scored a goal for the Pioneers. Cal State East Bay lost to CSU-Monterey Bay 11-10. The Pioneers trailed 10-9 after three quarters. Lauren Griffin scored with 1:05 remaining in the match to account for the Pioneers tenth goal. Liz Warren led the Pioneers with three goals scored. Mary Rosa, Jenna Casady and Griffin followed with two goals. Ana Rosa scored a second quarter goal for the Pioneers. The Collegiate III National Champion Cal State East Bay women's water polo team opened the 2009 campaign with an 18-12 defeat to Division I Santa Clara University on January 24. Sophomore Ana Rosa led the Pioneers in scoring with four goals. Brianna Finney and Lauren Griffin each scored two goals. Jenna Casady, Mary Rosa, Liz Warren, and Jenna Gelet each scored a goal for the Pioneers. The Pioneers will host the alumni on January 31 at noon. Cal State East Bay returns four athletes including sophomores Mary Rosa (58 goals-27 assists), Liz Warren (40 goals-16 assists), Ana Rosa (22 goals-25 assists) and Jenna Gelet (5 goals-9 assists).
PIONEERS WELL REPRESENTED ON 2009 ALL-AMERICAN TEAMS
The Pioneer women's water polo team landed three players on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches 2009 Women's All-American Teams. Mary Rosa, the Pioneers top goal scorer with 89, earned second team All-American honors. Liz Warren (84 goals) and Jenna Casady (56 goals) received honorable mention recognition.
Eight Pioneer women's water polo student-athletes were named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Academic All-American Teams. Mary Rosa, Ana Rosa, Liz Warren, Amanda Brown, Amber Gray, Ali Berlin, Jenna Casady, and Lauren Griffin, all received Academic All-American honors.
PIONEER WOMEN'S WATER POLO TEAM CAPTURES COLLEGIATE III WOMEN'S WATER POLO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP/ LISA DEROSSI-COOPER NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR/ GOALIE ELISE WILHELMSEN SELECTED PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Cal State East Bay women's water polo team won its first ever national championship defeating Cal Lutheran University 7-6 in four overtimes in the Collegiate III Women's Water Polo National Championship title match on May 4. The match was a one goal margin for most of regulation play with Cal Lutheran leading 3-2 at halftime. Cal State East Bay scored two unanswered goals to take a 4-3 advantage after three quarters. Regulation play ended in a 5-5 tie. Water Polo regulations have two overtime quarters before sudden death. Cal Lutheran took a 6-5 lead after the first overtime. Cal State East Bay tied the match 6-6 in the second overtime period. As sudden death began, neither team scored in the third overtime. The Pioneers Ashley Vieira scored the winning goal near the end of the fourth overtime giving Cal State East Bay its first ever national championship. The last national championship for the Cal State East Bay Intercollgiate Athletic Program was women's soccer in 1988. Lisa DeRossi-Cooper was named Coach of the Year while goalie Elise Wilhelmsen was selected Most Valuable Player and first team all-tournament. Lauren Binner, who scored 12 goals in the championships, also earned first team all-tournament honors. Laura Demeneces was named second team all-tournament. Coach DeRossi-Cooper was pleased with the entire team play. "We played our game on both offense and defense. Everyone contributed and they stayed focused and relaxed."
The Pioneers reached the championship game by defeating Cal Lutheran 8-7 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 11-6 on May 3. Pioneer goalie Elise Wilhelmsen was solid in the net against Cal Lutheran as she turned away 14 shots including a potential tieing goal in the final seconds of regulation. Nikki Snyder and Mary Rosa each scored twice for the Pioneers. Laura Demeneces, Jeanette Demeneces, Lauren Binner, and Kelly Flaherty each scored a goal to contribute to the victory. Cal State East Bay defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 11-6 in a semi-final match. Lauren Binner scored three goals while Nikki Snyder and Mary Rosa each scored twice. Elise Wilhelmsen turned away 14 shots. On May 2, the Pioneers defeated Colorado College 21-4 and Grove City College 13-5. Lauren Binner scored eight goals in the two victories. Liz Warren scored five goals including four against Colorado College.
For the fifth consecutive season, the Cal State East Bay women's water polo team competed in the Collegiate III National Championships. The Collegiate III National Championships took place May 2-4 at Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut. The eight-team field included Cal State East Bay, Cal Lutheran, U.C.Santa Cruz, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Carthage College, Grove City College, Colorado College, and Connecticut College. In 2007, the Pioneers finished 4th in the Collegiate III National Championships. The Pioneers were the 2005 runners-up in the Collegiate III Championships. In 2004, the Pioneers made their first ever post season apperance at the Collegiate III National Championships. Cal State East Bay finished 20-14 for the season and 13-4 versus Division III competition. The Pioneers were ranked as high as second in the Collegiate III National Poll. Mary Rosa led the Pioneers in scoring with 58 goals and 27 assists. Liz Warren scored 40 goals followed by Laura Demeneces with 39. Demeneces posted a team-high 48 assists and was second on the Pioneers with 66 steals. Nikki Snyder contributed to a championship season with 34 goals while Ashley Vieira and Jeanette Demeneces tallied 30 each. Vieira led the Pioneers on defense with 93 steals. Goalie Elise Wilhelmsen recorded 356 saves and had 11 assists.

Laura Demeneces was a second team selection while Mary Rosa and Lauren Binner received honorable mention recognition. Bethany Helmus, Ana Rosa, Mary Rosa, Liz Warren, Kirsten Palm, Alexx Olejnik, Ashley Vieira, and Kelly Flaherty were Academic All-Americans.

Mary Rosa led the Pioneers with two goals while goalie Elise Wilhelmsen recorded seven saves. Cal State East Bay scored four goals in the third quarter to defeat U.C. Santa Cruz 7-5. Mary Rosa scored three goals including two in the third quarter. Kelly Flaherty, Cindy Melendez, Laura Demeneces, and Jeanette Demeneces each scored a goal for the Pioneers. Elise Wilhelmsen had 12 saves. Cal State East Bay claimed ninth place with a 10-8 victory over Colorado State. Ashley Vieira scored three goals while Laura and Jeanette Demeneces added two each.
