The
Master of Science in Education with an Option
in Online Teaching and Learning prepares educators
and trainers to design, implement, and teach
online courses. Students in the master's program
study the practices, theories, and protocols
of online teaching and learning while experiencing
online learning themselves. The program is accredited
by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges
(WASC) and is offered entirely online.
Students
will cover a wide range of topics including
the virtual classroom, synchronous vs. asynchronous
learning, the use of the World-Wide Web for
instruction, multimedia instructional design
for individuals with disabilities, virtual communities,
and a variety of uses of technology tools. Online
courses will be contrasted with campus or corporate
based face-to-face courses in terms of how each
serves to meet the needs of individual students.
Faculty:
The master's program is interdisciplinary and
draws upon Cal State
East Bay
faculty from the School of Education and Allied Studies, the
School of Arts, Letters, and Social Sciences, the School of Business and Economics, and the School
of Science. These faculty
have experienced online education as students
in online courses and as instructors in the
delivery of online courses. Experienced and
outstanding part-time faculty from other institutions
of higher education and from the professional
community will be available in addition to full-time
faculty from Cal State East
Bay.
Features:
The master's degree is offered entirely online,
so students are never required to come to campus.
Instead, students may attend from anyplace in
the world where they have Internet and World-Wide
Web access. Because of the intensive nature
of online instruction, students should expect
to spend 6-12 hours or more per week on each
online class. Courses are either 5 or 10 weeks
in length. Students will be able to communicate
with their instructors and advisors by email,
telephone, "chat" room office hours,
and/or videoconference.
Admission
Requirements:
The master's program requires that students
have access to a computer and modem that is
connected to the World-Wide Web. Students will
have password access to a course delivery system
for all but the project/thesis course, which
will be done on a one-on-one basis, mostly via
email or web server, with their advisor.
The
master's degree requires that students:
- hold a bachelor's degree from
an accredited institution
- have earned a GPA of 3.0 in
the last 90 quarter units (or semester equivalent)
of upper-division, post-baccalaureate, and
graduate-level course-work
- have filed all graduate application
materials with the office of Admissions and
Records
- provide one official copy of
transcripts from all higher education institutions
attended
- *have a TOEFL score of 550 on
paper test or 213 on computerized test OR
have an official transcript or letter from
the college or university certifying that
English was the language of instruction (*only
applies to international students from countries
where English is not the official language)
