Single Subject Credential - SB 2042 Integrated Pathway
Currently offered in New Haven

All CSUEB single subject credential preparation programs meet AB 1059 (Ducheny)
requirements for English Learners in the regular classroom.
CLAD Emphasis credentials no longer exist in California.

The Single Subject Program is a comprehensive professional preparation program leading to the basic credential that authorizes you to teach in one of the following areas: art, English, foreign language, standard and foundational level math, music, physical education, standard and specialized science (biology, chemistry, geosciences and physics), and social science. This credential is required for teaching at the secondary level and a few elementary positions.

Our Single Subject preparation programs are uniquely structured to provide the maximum amount of support for candidates. The credential programs are four quarters in length. Candidates are admitted in teams of 30-40 applicants. You take all your classes with the other members of your team. Your schedule of classes is established before you enter the program. This means that you do not need to worry about "getting into" your classes. You will, of course, have to register within the university's registration period for each quarter.

A member of the Department of Teacher Education faculty will serve as your Team Leader. The Team Leader will arrange your field experience and serve as your mentor as you move through the program.

The Integrated Pathway is accredited under the new SB 2042 legislation and consists of four courses wherein the course content is integrated, articulated, and spiraled over four quarters. All single subject candidates also meet in subject-alike instructional methods courses each quarter.

Please note that all Single Subject teams begin their coursework during the summer quarter (mid-June). The Single Subject team classes are scheduled in the afternoons (106pm) during the summer months, and begin in the late afternoon (4:30 pm - we call these "evening" teams) during the K-12 academic year . All the teams require field experience during the day (traditional student teaching experiences with a master teacher or full classroom responsibility under an internship credential).

All of the programs are full-time and will require you to take between 16 and 22 units a quarter. Please remember, you will start with your team, take your courses with your team, and finish with your team. You may not move through our program at your own pace.


Preliminary Single Subject Credential
Upon satisfactory completion of our preparation program, you are eligible for a SB 2042 Preliminary teaching credential, which is valid for five years. One must hold a Preliminary credential before commencing work toward the Professional Clear credential.


Professional Clear Single Subject Credential
Teachers holding a SB 2042 Preliminary credential are required to complete a two-year Induction program in order to earn a Professional Clear credential.
