I was a teacher in another state. How can I become certified to teach in California?
If you have completed a professional teacher preparation program including
supervised student teaching in which a grade of "B" or better was earned
and you were eligible for certification in that state, you must successfully
complete the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST).
You may then apply directly to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing
for a California Preliminary Credential. Also see Department
of Teacher Education.
How do I apply to the Teacher Education program?
You must complete BOTH a University application and a Department application
within the specified application
dates. Contact the Office of Enrollment Services for the application
to the University. You may complete a University application using the
Computerized Admissions
application. You MUST attend an Advisement
Session in order to receive a Department application.
How do I determine if I have met all pre-requisites to the Teacher Education program?
The Credential Student Service Center will review your transcripts
for equivalency of the requirements after your application has been received.
Also see the Department of Teacher Education entrance requirements.
What is the required grade point average for admission to the Teacher Education program?
The GPA is determined by the CSU Chancellor's Office based upon the
undergraduate college major. Currently the GPA is 2.67 overall, 2.75 in
the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units.
How long does it take to complete the program?
The program is a full-time four quarter program (one calendar
year). You are required to have three quarters of field experience.
Will I need to take the California Basic Educational Skills Test?
Yes. All first time credential applicants must take and pass CBEST
prior to admission into the program. Also see the
CBEST
Web page.
I was a teacher's aide and have had my fingerprints taken already. Must
I have them taken again?
Unless you hold or have held a permit or credential issued by the
California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, you must file the Certificate
of Clearance Application. See the
Certificate of Clearance Guidelines for more information. If you hold or
have held a credential issued by the CCTC, you must submit a copy of the
credential along with a current TB report to the Credentials Office.
What is a Subject Matter program?
Completion of an approved California collegiate subject matter program
satisfies the requirement of demonstrating subject matter competency for
teaching. The subject matter program is the alternative to the testing
system (the CSET) adopted by the California
Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The Single Subject evaluation can be
made through the appropriate academic department.
I hold a Preliminary Teaching Credential. How can I find out what requirements
are needed for my fifth year of study in order to obtain a Professional
Clear Credential and recommendation from the University?
The Credential Student Service Center will complete the evaluation
and assign a faculty advisor to assist you in completing the requirements
for the Professional Clear Credential. Request a Ryan Preliminary Evaluation
form from the Credential Student Service Center.
I have Peace Corp experience and would like to obtain a teaching
credential. Does this experience qualify me for a credential?
If you have two years teaching experience with the Peace Corp, you
can obtain a Preliminary Teaching Credential once you have passed the CBEST.
I was a teacher in another country and would like to become a teacher
in California. What procedure must I follow?
See the
CTC Foreign Transcript Evaluation pdf Web page.
I started a program a number of years ago but did not finish. How do
I find out what else is needed for the credential?
You must contact the Advising Coordinator in the Department of Teacher
Education who can assist you in developing an
Individualized
Program leading to certification.
I have an expired or lapsed credential. How do I renew the credential?
If the credential is academically clear, contact the California Commission
on Teacher Credentialing for a re-issuance of the document. If additional
course work was needed to renew the credential, you must request an evaluation
of your transcripts by an Institution with an approved program to determine
the remaining course work needed to clear your credential. The Credential
Student Service Center at CSU East Bay provides this service. Complete an
evaluation request form and submit the requested information to the Credential
Student Service Center. Also see the
CCTC
Renewal and Reissuance Web page.
