Scholarship Available for Prospective Educators —

Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) International, an organization of about 100,000 members worldwide, is dedicated to upholding the ideals of research, service, and leadership in education. As part of fulfilling these ideals, the CSU East Bay - Diablo Chapter of PDK is offering three $500 scholarships to high school seniors who plan to pursue a teaching career. These recipients also may be eligible as candidates for 30-40 scholarship grants of $500 to up to renewable awards totaling $5,000 over four years from PDK International.

Seniors attending high schools in or residing in Castro Valley, Dublin, Fremont, Hayward, Livermore, Newark, Pleasanton, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Sunol, and Union City as well as Eastern Contra Costa County are eligible to apply. Last year's scholarship winners were Tyler Cornfield of Foothill High School in Pleasanton and Rosa Lee of San Leandro High School.

All applications must be received by Friday, February 1, 2008. Completed applications consist of an application form, two letters of reference (at least one from an educator), an essay (up to 500 words), and an official transcript.  Outstanding Service to Education Award —

Our Chapter has modified our Outstanding Educator Award this year to make the opportunity to receive an award from our Chapter open to more people. Individuals who have provided exceptional service to public education in the geographical area served by our Chapter are eligible for consideration (Southern and Eastern Alameda County, Eastern Contra Costa County ). They must have done something noteworthy for public education, at any level (Pre-school through higher education) through their Leadership, Research, and/or Service.

Candidates for the award must be nominated by a current member of our PDK Chapter. A nominations form is enclosed with this newsletter. Completed forms, with attachments, must be submitted to David Hahn by March 14 th . Up to three individuals will be chosen by the Board at their meeting on April 9 th . The winner(s) will be announced in the next issue of the Messenger and notified by our Secretary Kate Reed, and will be invited to attend our awards banquet on May 23 rd , with their dinner provided.

Individuals do not necessarily have to be employed by an educational agency to be considered for this award. Possibilities include community leaders, volunteers, school board members, business people, media staff, students, researchers, writers, etc.

To nominate an individual, complete the enclosed form and attach relevant items to provide evidence of the way in which that person has done something noteworthy for public education in terms of Leadership, Research, and/or Service (e.g., copies of newspaper articles, letters from educational leaders).

Completed nominations forms with attachments must be received by David Hahn by March 14 th to be considered for this award. Potential recipients do not need to be notified by the nominator that they are under consideration.
